He became a lawyer and served as the Governor of Missouri from 1921 to 1925. During his first month as Governor, Hyde recommended extensive reorganization of state government by regrouping responsibilities into a few departments. Later he served as the Secretary of Agriculture under President of the United States President Herbert Hoover . He died in New York City following cancer surgery in 1947. Arthur Merton Chickering was a U.S. arachnologist . He was born on March 23, 1887 in North Danville, Vermont and died on May 24, 1974. He studied in Yale University under Alexander Petrunkevitch until 1913. In 1916 he earned a master of science degree in cell biology cytology and in 1927 a Ph.D. for cytological studies on the spermatogenesis of insects . He taught at Beloit College from 1913 to 1918 and at Albion College from 1918 to 1957. From 1953 to 1971 he was Research Associate in Arachnology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard . He went on numerous field trips to Central America from 1928 to 1964. His favorite collecting method was sifting litter . Because Ralph Vary Chamberlin R. V. Chamberlin did not return some of his collections in 1928 but instead published on them, Chickering preferred to work on his collections himself later on. The saying that An engineer can do for a dollar what any fool can do for two is attributed to him. His book The economic theory of the location of railways was first published in 1887 by the Railroad Gazette and John Wiley New York. The subtitle was An analysis of the conditions which govern the judicious adjustment of gradients, curvature and length of line to each other, and to the character and volume of traffic . The 5th edition had the subtitle An analysis of the conditions controlling the laying out of railways to effect the most judicious expenditure of capital . He indicated the importance of the ruling gradient, and its effect on train loads and running costs. By 1906 it was in its 6th edition and had also been printed in London. He was involved in the design and construction of new railways in Mexico . ArthurM. Hitch February 26, 1875 February 20, 1956 , was the Superintendent education Superintendent of Kemper Military School in Boonville, Missouri from 1928 to 1948. Hitch was born in Cuba, Missouri in 1875. He attended the Missouri University of Science and Technology Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in Rolla, Missouri , then earned an A.B. from the University of Missouri in 1897. Hitch arrived at Kemper Military School in 1899 as an instructor of Latin , English studies English , German language German , and Elocution . By 1907, he had been promoted to principal. He married Bertha Johnston, daughter of School Superintendent Colonel Thomas A. Johnston , in 1908. In 1928, Colonel Johnston announced that he was retiring after 48 years as superintendent, and selected Colonel Hitch, his son in law, to lead the school. Hitch ably guided the school through the severe financial crisis of the Great Depression , when enrollment plummeted, and into World War II , during which the school operated year round with over 500 students. During his superintendency, the new stadium and football fields were constructed in 1937, the Academic Hall was built in 1939, and the Science Hall was added in 1941. Colonel A. M. Arthur Monroe Free January 15, 1879 April 1, 1953 was a United States Representative from California . He was born in San Jose, California . He attended the public schools of Santa Clara, California Santa Clara and the University of the Pacific United States University of the Pacific . He graduated from Stanford University in 1901 and from its law department in 1903. He was admitted to the bar in 1903 and commenced practice in San Jose. He moved to moved to Mountain View and was city attorney from 1904 1910. He was the District Attorney of Santa Clara County from 1907 1919. He voluntarily retired and resumed the practice of law at San Jose. Free was a delegate to the Republican Party United States Republican State conventions in 1914 and from 1920 to 1936. He was elected as a Republican Party United States Republican to the Sixty seventh and to the five succeeding Congresses March 4, 1921 March 3, 1933 . He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1932 to the Seventy third Congress. He resumed the practice of law in San Jose, California where he died in 1953.
