ArthurStanleyRiggs 1879 November 8, 1952 was an United States American writer, editor and historian, noted for his biographies of Titian and Diego Vel zquez Vel zquez . Biography Riggs was born in New York in 1879. In 1896, he took his first job as a clerk for Standard Oil Standard Oil Company in New York. In 1898, Riggs served with the Auxiliary ship Naval Auxiliary Force in the Spanish American War . In 1900, Riggs worked for the New York newspapers the Commercial Advertiser , New York Evening Mail The Mail and Express and the New York Times . In 1901, he married Elisabeth Adams Corey died December 25, 1944 . He served as the director of the Archaeological Society of Washington from 1925 to 1935 and was editor of the society s magazine Art and Archaeology . The family returned to England in 1893 and Stanley was elected as Member of Parliament MP for Ormskirk UK Parliament constituency Ormskirk in 1898, a position he held until 1918. He was Provincial Grand Master of the Isle of Man United Grand Lodge of England Freemasons from 1902 to 1912 and had a Lodge named in his honour, he was also Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club from 1905 1936 and Treasurer of St Thomas Hospital from 1917 1943. Arthur Jehu Stanley, Jr. March 21, 1901 &ndash January 27, 2001 was a United States federal judge . Born in Lincoln County, Kansas , Stanley was a sergeant in the United States Army during World War I , from 1918 to 1919 and a Fireman, First Class in the United States Navy from 1921 to 1925. He received an LL.B. from the Kansas City School of Law in 1928, and was in private practice in Kansas City, Kansas from 1928 to 1933, a County attorney of Wyandotte County, Kansas from 1934 to 1940, and a member of the Kansas State Senate from 1940 to 1941. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army during World War II , from 1941 to 1945 returning to private practice in Kansas City from 1945 to 1958. On June 25, 1958 Stanley was nominated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to the seat on the United States District Court for the District of Kansas vacated by Arthur J. Mellott . Stanley was confirmed by the United States Senate on July 3, receiving his commission on July 7. He served as chief judge from 1961 to 1971, assuming senior status on April 1, 1971. Stanley served in that capacity until his death, in Leavenworth, Kansas on January 27, 2001. ArthurStanley Williams 1861 in Brighton November 21, 1938 was an England English solicitor and amateur astronomer . He dedicated himself to the telescope telescopic observation of the planet s. He also was enthusiastic about yachting , winning the Challenge Cup yachting Challenge Cup in 1920. Planetary works Using a 6.5 inch reflector on an equatorial mount for most of his work, he published an influential paper in 1896 On the Drift of Surface Material of Jupiter in Different Latitudes. With this work he greatly strengthened the efforts to systematically observe Jupiter. He also invented the naming of Cloud pattern on Jupiter belts and zones in 1898. He championed the method of determining the longitude of surface features using their central meridian transit. In 1899 he published his most influential paper Periodic Variations in the Colours of the two Equatorial Belts of Jupiter. He also observed spots on Saturn , and the linear features on Mars , called canals . He agreed early on with Eug ne Michel Antoniadi E. M. Antoniadi that these were largely illusory. Elisha Riggs June 13, 1779, Brookeville, Maryland August 3, 1853, New York, NY was the founder of the Riggs National Bank. Early career After his education, Riggs moved to Georgetown, DC , where he was employed as a merchant. He fought in the War of 1812 as an ensign in the 32nd regiment of militia in Anne Arundel County, Maryland . Before that, he had established himself as a dry goods merchant and hired George Peabody as his office boy. Business Success By 1815, Riggs and Peabody entered into a partnership under the firm name of Riggs & Peabody, dry goods merchant. Business flourished and soon they expanded to Baltimore in 1816. By 1821, they had offices in New York City and Philadelphia . In 1822 the firm s name was changed to Riggs, Peabody & Co. with the main office in Baltimore. In 1829 the partnership was dissolved and Riggs retired to New York City. His estate is now part of the United States customs house. Banking Riggs and Peabody continued their business ventures and engaged in international finance. They were mainly concerned with restoring the credit of Maryland abroad after the depression of 1841 1842 and disposed a bond issue of 8 million. Before moving to New York, Elisha established the bank of Corcoran & Riggs in Washington, DC, which was organized by his son George Washington Riggs and financed by Elisha. When the United States sought a loan to finance the Mexican American War , the Riggs bank was the only institution to bid for the full amount and lent the government 34 million in 1847 and 1848. After the retirement of William Corcoran, Elisha s son George Washington Riggs and his grandson Elisha Francis Riggs took over the business as Riggs & Co. in Washington.
