Unreferenced date December 2009 Image Artillery spoked wheel.jpg thumb 250px Artillery Wheel The artillery wheel was developed for use on gun carriage s when it was found that the lateral forces involved in horse artillery manoeuvres caused normally constructed cart wheels to collapse. Rather than having its spoke s mortise d into a wooden nave hub , it has them fitted together Miter joint mitred then bolted into a metal nave. Its tyre is shrunk onto the rim in the usual way but it is also bolted on for security. A normal wagon wheel is dished so that in its lowest part, the spokes are perpendicular to the ground thus supporting the weight with the axle not truly horizontal but angled downward toward the outside about 5 degrees . This is not done with artillery wheels. Image Humber 9 20 1926.jpg 250px thumb 1926 Humber car Humber car with artillery wheels When higher speeds and consequently higher lateral forces were attained with the introduction of motor vehicles, the artillery wheel was used in those too. By the 1920s, motor car s used wheels which looked at a glance like artillery wheels but which were of Forge Drop forge forged steel or welded from steel pressed sections. These too were usually called artillery wheels. By the 1930s they were obsolete having been replaced by wheels pressed from heavy gauge steel sheet or in sports cars and lightweight cars, by wire spokes. Image Mansell wheel.png thumb The Mansell Wheel is a railway wheel patented by Richard Mansell , the Carriage and Wagon superintendent of the South Eastern Railway UK South Eastern Railway in the UK. ref Dendy Marshall, C.F., History of the Southern Railway , Ian Allan 1963, ISBN 0 7110 0059 X ref The design was created in the 1840s and was eventually widely used on passenger railway stock in the UK. This is an interesting example of a composite wooden wheel, using the same principle as an artillery wheel but with a solid wooden centre instead of spokes. The drawing right is from an old railway design book ref Railway Mechanical Engineering , a practical treatise by engineering experts, Volume 1. the Gresham Publishing Company Ltd. London, 1923. The design and construction of carriages and wagons section by S Warner Carriage and Wagon Superintendent London and South Western Railway. ref from the early 20th Century. Overview The reason for using wood was to reduce the noise. Having a wooden centre eliminated the ringing noise that emanated from early railway wheels. Made from teak this type of wheel endured for a long time. Besides the reduction in noise there was an increased safety factor. While some of this might be attributed to the extra attention paid to what were specifically passenger carriage wheels, the potential for casting faults was also reduced. The wooden centres acted as Insulator electrical electrical insulators so Mansell wheels would not operate the track circuit s used in railway signalling. However, this problem was solved by fitting Bonding jumper copper bonding to the wheels. 1. Trundle wheel

Unreferenced date October 2010 Orphan date February 2009 The trundle wheel is a measuring device, a simplified form of a surveyor s wheel . It is commonly used by school children who need an easy way to find the rough distance from one place to another. The trundle wheel is composed of a wheel , a handle which is attached to the axle allowing the trundle wheel to be held easily, and a clicking device which is triggered once per revolution of the wheel. Trundle wheels are not as accurate as other methods of measuring distance but are a good way to get a rough estimation of a fairly long distance over a good surface. The Trundle wheel was invented by Hugh Boylan in the late 1970 s when he worked as a Quantity Surveyor for a small Irish Engineering company. There were patent issues with the device and after court proceedings the company won the rights to the patent. It works by having a wheel which has a circumference of exactly 1 metre, hence one revolution of the wheel equates to 1 metre of distance traveled on the ground if there is no slip. Every time the wheel makes a rotation, the wheel produces an audible click which is then counted and therefore the number of clicks that are counted by the user is approximately the number of metres traveled. Due to the design of the trundle wheel, it is not always moved in a straight line and this inevitably adds on extra distance to the final reading. 1. Snaefell Wheel

File Snaefell Wheel.JPG right thumb The Snaefell Wheel, Laxey. July 2009 The Snaefell Wheel also known as Lady Evelyn is a waterwheel in Laxey , Isle of Man . The wheel stands in the Laxey Washing Floors washing floors in Laxey Glen Gardens , approximately 700 metres south of the larger Laxey Wheel . The wheel was unveiled with the name Lady Evelyn to mark the extensive work of Evelyn Jones in her support of the Laxey Mines Research Team. History The wheel was purchased by the Snaefell Mining Company in 1865. Built by Messrs Leigh and Gilbert Howell of the Hawarden iron works in Flintshire , north Wales , it was one of two identical 50 ft 15.24 m diameter wheels to be produced. By 1910, the wheel had come to the end of its working life at the Snaefell Mining Company and was disassembled to be sent to Bodmin , Cornwall . By the 1950s the wheel had fallen into disuse, and in 1971 the Cornish Wheel Preservation Society had acquired the wheel and dismantled it for preservation. The society later merged with the Trevithick Society , who are the current owners of the wheel. In 1976, the Llywernog Silver Lead Mine in Wales took the wheel on loan from the society though never reconstructed it. In 2003, an effort was started to restore the wheel to its home in Laxey and on 20 August 2006, the wheel had its official reopening ceremony and began turning for the first time in decades. To mark the occasion of the official opening, and in similarity to its big sister, a piece of music Snaefell Wheel March was specially written by Paul Dunderdale for the occasion and performed for the first time by Onchan Silver Band at the opening ceremony, with suitable fanfare. 1. Magic wheel

unreferenced date June 2007 The magic wheel , or magnetic wheel is a wheel that continues to spin for a long time after being started, and is one of the earliest examples of an attempt at a perpetual motion machine . This device was invented in Middle Ages medieval Bavaria . It looked like a wagon wheel spinning on an axle, affixed to a base. The superstitious population of the time believed it spun by the power of magic. The mechanism of the magic wheel used several large magnet s lodestone s affixed to the wheel s outside rim, like the seats of a Ferris wheel . Each magnet was backed by a lead plate seat . An extra stationary magnet was affixed to the base. Each magnet on the wheel s rim was attracted to the magnet in the base on its downward approach, then prevented from turning over when the opposite pole of the magnet passed over in the wheel, thus being repelled upward. The magnets were not allowed to touch one another. This attraction repulsion maintained inertia efficiently, similar to a flywheel , such that the wheel spun from a very long time and was thought supernatural by some. Incorrectly deemed by some to be a perpetual motion machine , the magic wheel eventually comes to a stop because of frictional losses at the central bearing. Proponents of Zero point energy Claims in pseudoscience free energy devices have advanced the theory that the lead plating interrupts the magnetic attraction between the rim magnets and the stationary magnet in sequence, thus permitting the wheel to continue turning and bring the next rim magnet into position. However, the presence of lead dampens magnetic fields equally in any directions as a magnet s magnetic field field lines must stay continuous from pole to pole , and the symmetry of closed forces in the system means that no interaction ... necessary to keep the wheel rotating. 1. Wheel-barrowing

Unreferenced date December 2009 Wheel barrowing is a problem that may occur when a Aviator pilot places excessive forward pressure on the elevator control of an aeroplane with a tricycle gear nose wheel during takeoff or landing. Forward pressure on the flight control s places an up force on the horizontal tail, thereby transferring weight from the landing gear main wheels to the nose wheel. The aircraft, in effect, behaves like a wheelbarrow and directional control is compromised. In extreme cases, the propeller aircraft propeller of a single engine airplane may strike the ground damaging it and the engine, or the aircraft may tip over on the nose wheel and one main wheel causing wing damage.
