    Aryenis of Lydia was, according to Herodotus , the daughter of King Alyattes of Lydia and the sister of King Croesus of Lydia . Family Aryenis was also the Queen consort of Astyages , King of Medes Media and mother of Mandane of Media and a probable Amytis, married to her nephew Cyrus the Great . She was also mother in law of Cambyses I of Anshan and maternal grandmother of Cyrus the Great . She was given in marriage to Astyages to seal a treaty between Cyaxares of Media and Alyattes II of Lydia , following the Battle of the Eclipse . Herodotus identified her as the mother of Mandane, but there is speculation that Mandane of Media Mandane the wife of Cambyses I of Anshan Persia Anshan may have been born to an earlier wife of Astyages .     Alyattes , king of Lydia 619 560 BC , considered to be the founder of the Lydian empire , was the son of Sadyattes , of the house of the Mermnadae . Life For several years he continued the war against Miletus begun by his father, but was obliged to turn his attention towards the Medes and Babylonians . On May 28, 585 BC, during the Battle of Halys 585 BC Battle of Halys fought against Cyaxares , king of Media, a solar eclipse took place see also Thales hostilities were suspended, peace concluded, and the K z l rmak river Halys fixed as the boundary between the two kingdoms. Alyattes drove the Cimmeria ns see Scythia from Asia Minor , subdued the Carians , and took several Ionia n cities including zmir Smyrna , Colophon city Colophon . Smyrna was sacked and destroyed with its inhabitants forced to move into the countryside. He standardised the weight of coins 1 Stater 168 grains of wheat . The coins were produced using an anvil die technique and stamped with the Lion s head, the symbol of the Mermnadae. He was succeeded by his son Croesus . His daughter Aryenis of Lydia was Queen consort of Astyages , King of Media. His tomb still exists on the plateau between Lake Gygaea and the river Hermus to the north of Sardis &mdash a large mound of earth with a substructure of huge stones. It was excavated by Spiegelthal in 1854, who found that it covered a large vault of finely cut marble blocks approached by a flat roofed passage of the same stone from the south. The sarcophagus and its contents had been removed by early plunderers of the tomb. All that was left were some broken alabaster vases, pottery and charcoal. Mandane in Herodotus histories According to Herodotus , Mandane was born to Astyages , King of Media and son of Cyaxares the Great, and Princess Aryenis of Lydia , daughter of Alyattes II , the father of Croesus of Lydia . Shortly after her birth, Herodotus reports that Astyages had a strange dream where his daughter urinated so much that Asia would flood. He consulted the magus magi who interpreted the dream as a warning that Mandane s son would overthrow his rule. To forestall that outcome, Astyages betrothed Mandane to the vassal Achaemenid prince, Cambyses I of Anshan , a man of good family and quiet habits , whom Astyages considered no threat to the Median throne. Astyages had a second dream when Mandane became pregnant where a vine grew from her womb and overtook the world. Terrified, he sent his most loyal court retainer, Harpagus , to kill the child. However, Harpagus was loath to spill royal blood and hid the child, Cyrus II Cyrus the Great , with a shepherd named Mitradates . Years later, Cyrus would defy his grandfather, Astyages, leading to war between them a war that Cyrus would have lost, but for Harpagus defection on the battlefield of Pasargadae , leading to the overthrow of Astyages, as the dream had forecast. Mandane in Xenophon s Cyropedia Xenophon also gives reference to Mandane in his Cyropedia Cyrop dia The Education of Cyrus . In this story, Mandane and her son travel to Astyages court, when Cyrus is in his early teens. According to Nicolas of Damascus his original name was Atradates, and he was wounded and later died in the Battle of the Persian Border which he, with his son, fought against Astyages. It occurred in about 551  BC, and he is reported to have received an honorable burial. According to Herodotus , Astyages chose Cambyses as a son in law because he considered him to pose no threat to the Median throne. The final battle of a five year war between Alyattes II of Lydia and Cyaxares of the Medes, the battle ended abruptly due to a total solar eclipse the eclipse was perceived as an omen , indicating that the Deity god s wanted the fighting to stop. Since the exact dates of eclipses can be calculated, the Battle of the Eclipse is the earliest historical event of which the date is known with such precision. This date is based on the proleptic Julian calendar . Some Scythian hunters employed by the Medes who once returned empty handed were insulted by Cyaxares. In revenge the hunters slaughtered one of his sons and served him to the Medes. The hunters then fled to Sardis , the capital of the Lydians. When Cyaxares asked for the Scythians to be returned to him, Alyattes refused to hand them over in response, the Medes invaded. Aftermath A truce was hastily arranged. As part of the terms of the agreement, Alyattes s daughter Aryenis was married to Cyaxares s son Astyages , and the river K z l rmak River Halys was declared to be the border of the two warring nations.
