File Heraclius mule 612173.jpg thumb An example of a Heraclius mule In numismatics , a mule is a coin or medal minted with obverse and reverse designs not normally seen on the same piece. These can be intentional or produced by error. This type of error is highly sought after, and examples can fetch steep prices from collectors. The earliest mules are found among ancient Greek and Roman coins. Opinion is divided between those who think that they are accidental, the result of an incorrect combination of a new die with one that had officially been withdrawn from use, or the work of coiners working with dies stolen from an official mint, perhaps at a time when one of them should have been destroyed. The name derives from the mule , the hybrid offspring of a horse and a donkey, due to such a coin having two sides intended for different coins, much as a mule has parents of two different species. Prominent modern mule errors Several prominent mule errors have been discovered in recent times. One of the most famous is the Sacagawea Dollar State Quarters Washington State Quarter mule featuring the obverse of a Statehood quarter and the reverse of a Sacagawea dollar. This coin was struck on a Sacagawea dollar planchet . The Coin walk is a type of coin trick in which a coin is flipped over the fingers to create the illusion of a coin walking across the back of the hand. It is one of the most famous coin manipulation tricks. It is also known as the coin roll, knuckle roll, and the steeplechase flourish. The trick is generally performed on the first phalanx bone of each finger of one hand. After the coin has been flipped over by each phalanx, not including the smallest finger, the thumb brings the coin back under the hand and back to the index finger to repeat the trick as many times as desired. In these nations, most coins, including all modern coins, have their reverse turned, or aligned, in a specified way relative to the obverse. There are essentially two options, referred to as coin orientation and medallic orientation . For a medal to display properly, even if it flips over, when it is tagged to a uniform, the reverse needs to be aligned so that the top of the reverse shares the same position as the top of the obverse. This alignment is called medallic orientation . The opposite situation is seen in some coins, e.g. coins of the United States but not those of the United Kingdom . In this case, the coin must be flipped about its horizontal axis in order to see the other side the correct way up. In other words, the image on one face of the coin is upside down relative to the other. For this reason, coin orientation is used in the United States to express the opposite of medal orientation . This is the part which exceeds the area of the die which strikes the coin during production, and as a result is pushed upward and sharpened to form a sort of border around the coin s design. The raised rim reduces wear on the face of the coin. sfn Sherwood 1893 p 68 For accessibility purposes, the rim of the coin is sometimes milled with certain patterns in order for the blindness blind to more easily distinguish between coins.
