  1. Al-Rabi' ibn Yunus

Al Rab ibn Y nus ibn Abd All h ibn Ab Farwa ca. 730 785 786 was a freedman who became one of the leading ministers of the early Abbasid Caliphate , serving under the caliphs al Mansur ruled 754 775 , al Mahdi r. 775 785 and al Hadi r. 785 786 . Al Rabi was born to a slave woman near Medina about 730 CE. His father Yunus, the scion of a well to do family, denied his paternity, and the infant was sent to another family and eventually to an estate in the desert where he was reduced to menial labour. He was however bought by Ziyad ibn Abd Allah al Harithi, the governor of Medina, who in turn presented him as a gift to al Saffah , the first Abbasid caliph. Noted by al Mansur for his literary education and especially his ability in Arabic poetry, he rose to prominence within the Abbasid court, culminating in his appointment as hadjib chamberlain and eventually wazir . He is often mentioned in the histories as a powerful figure, controlling access to the Caliph, and a capable administrator. He supervised the construction of Karkh , the commercial extramural suburb of Baghdad , as well as the so called Palace of Eternity Qasr al Khuld , where the Caliphs preferred to stay. Al Rabi even received from al Mansur one quarter of the new city as a grant and named after him kati at al Rabi . He was instrumental in ensuring the smooth succession of al Mahdi, but he was replaced as wazir by Abu Ubayd Allah , and returned to his post as hadjib , which had in the meantime been held by his son al Fadl ibn al Rabi . When Abu Ubayd Allah insulted him during a visit, Al Rabi brought about the former s downfall in 779 780, by accusing and proving his son to be a non believer. He did not return to the post of wazir , however, until the reign of al Hadi, when for a short while he was wazir , hadjib and head of the chancery. 1. Al-Muntasir

Al Muntasir lang ar died 862 was the Abbasid caliph in Baghdad from 861 to 862. His pious title means He that Triumphs in the Lord . Muhammad ibn Jarir al Tabari records that in A.H. 236 850 851 al Muntasir led the pilgrimage. The previous year al Mutawakkil had named his three son s heirs and seeming to favour al Muntasir. However, this appeared to change and al Muntasir feared his father was going to move against him. So, it seems he struck first. Al Mutawakkil was killed by a Turkish soldier on December 11, 861. Al Muntasir succeeded smoothly to the throne of the Caliphate on that same day in December 861 with the support of the Turkish faction after the murder of his father by a Turkish soldier. Al Muntasir was implicated in the crime. The Turkish party then prevailed on al Muntasir to remove his brothers from the succession, fearing revenge for the murder of their father. In their place, he was to appoint his son as heir apparent. On April 27, 862 both brothers, though al Mu tazz after a little hesitation, wrote a statement of abdication. Al Muntasir was lauded because, unlike his father, he loved the house of Al Shi a Islam Sh a and removed the ban on pilgrimage to the tombs of Hasan ibn Ali Hassan and Husayn ibn Ali Hussayn . He sent Wasif to raid the Byzantines. Al Muntasir s reign lasted less than half a year it ended with his death of unknown causes on June 7th or 8th 862. There are various accounts of the illness that carried him off, including that he was bled with a poisoned lancet. Al Tabari p. 222 3 states that al Muntasir is the first Abbasid whose tomb is known, that it was made public by his mother, a Greek slave girl and that earlier caliphs desired their tombs to be kept secret for fear of desecration. Joel L. Kraemer in his translation of al Tabari notes on page 223 Ayni comments, citing al Sibt b. al Jawzi , that Tabari s statement here is surprising since the tombs of the Abbasid caliphs are in fact known, e.g., the tomb of al Saffa ...   more details
