Asa Pollard 1735 1775 is generally identified as the first soldier to fall at the Battle of Bunker Hill in the American Revolutionary War . Though for some reason often described as a farm boy , Pollard was 40 years old when he fell at Breed s Hill , reportedly beheaded by a cannon ball fired from the British ship the Somerset in Boston Harbor. Accounts of the circumstances of his death differ. A popular book Now We Are Enemies The Story of Bunker Hill by Thomas Fleming 1960 relates an often told story that he was killed as he led other soldiers to water. His lands ultimately became incorporated in London s Springbank Park. By the 1820s he removed westward to settle on the bank of the Ausable River Lake Huron Ausable River in what later became Bosanquet Township in Lambton County, Ontario Lambton County . Here he operated a salt well . He and his wife whose name is not known are credited with being the first white settlers in the area of the present village of Arkona, Ontario . Asa was still living at the time of the 1851 Bosanquet Township assessment, living just east of Arkona, apparently next door to an Ezekiel Townsend who was possibly his son. Asa Mahan November 9, 1799, Vernon , New York spaced ndash 1889 was a United States U.S. Congregational clergyman and educator and the first president of Oberlin College and Adrian College . Career Asa Mahan graduated from Hamilton College New York Hamilton College in 1824, and from Andover Theological Seminary in 1827. On November 10, 1829, he was ordained pastor of the Congregational church in Pittsford , New York, and in 1831 he was called to the pastorate of a Presbyterian church in Cincinnati , Ohio , named Lane Seminary. He accepted the presidency of the newly founded Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio Oberlin , Ohio , in 1835, simultaneously serving as the chair of intellectual and moral philosophy and a professor of theology .
