It formerly bred on the larger island, but was exterminated by introduced cat s, Brown Rat s, and human persecution. It breeds on the rocky slopes of Boatswainbird. As with other frigatebird s its movements when not breeding are little known because of identification problems within this difficult group, but it occurs off west Africa . A frigatebird found moribund in 1953 in Tiree , Scotland was identified at the time as Magnificent Frigatebird but was re examined in 2002 and found to be an Ascension Frigatebird Citation needed date April 2008 . It feeds on fish and similar surface prey such as small turtle s. This species is very similar to the other frigatebirds and is similarly sized to all but Lesser Frigatebird . It has a white axillary spur, and juveniles show a white head, and a distinctly white hind neck with no reddish brown hue. It has a brown breast band. It was declared extinct by Groombridge in 1994 BirdLife International confirmed this in 2000 and 2004. It is a member of the family Rallidae . The bird was endemism endemic to Ascension Island. Numerous subfossil bones of the bird have been found Peter Mundy made a sketch of it in 1656. It most likely lived in the near desert areas of the island and primarily ate Sooty Tern Sterna fuscata eggs. It is probable that it became extinct after rats were introduced to the island in the 18th century, but it may have survived until the introduction of feral cats in 1815.
