    Robert Thom 1774 1847 was a Scottish civil engineer who worked upon major hydraulic projects on the Isle of Bute and Inverclyde . On Bute, he created aquaduct s to increase the flow of water which powered the cotton mill s there, so that their capacity was increased. This economic success resulted in him becoming the laird of Ascog . He then created a larger system to supply water power to Greenock .     The Dunoon Massacre was a massacre that took place in Scotland in 1646. Men of the powerful Clan Campbell massacred men, women and children of the Clan Lamont . ref Levene, Mark & Roberts, Penny. The Massacre in History, Berghahn Books, 1999. ISBN 1571819347. ref By 1646, the Clan Campbell, neighbours of the Clan Lamont, had steadily encroached the Lamont s lands. After the Battle of Inverlochy 1645 , the Clan Lamont took the opportunity to lay waste to the Campbell s territory. The following year, the powerful Clan Campbell army invaded the Clan Lamont taking their Castles Toward and Ascog. Sir James Lamont surrendered after accepting fair terms for his people, but the Campbells then slaughtered over two hundred of Lamont s men, women and children. Elsewhere, one tree was said to have carried thirty five bodies from its branches, and another thirty six men were buried alive. The two Lamont castles were decimated and Sir James Lamont was thrown into a dungeon for five years. He was later Oxford Professor of Poetry 1906 1911 , and President of the British Academy 1932 1936 . He was a friend of William Morris , and wrote the 1899 official biography. He also published works on Virgil , the Latin poets, the Iceland ic sagas, Shakespeare and the sayings of Jesus . He married Margaret Burne Jones 1866 1953 , the only daughter of artist and designer Edward Burne Jones . They lived in Kensington and later Holland Park . He became a member of the Order of Merit in 1935. He died in London . The couple s elder daughter, Angela Margaret, and their son, Denis George, are better known as the novelists Angela Thirkell and Denis Mackail .     Use dmy dates date May 2012 For the traveller and writer John Fullarton writer John Fullarton c.1645 1727 , of Auchenbreck Castle Greenhall , Argyll , was a Scottish clergyman and Nonjuring schism nonjurant Scottish Episcopal Church Episcopal Bishop of Edinburgh between 1720 and 1727. Origins Fullarton was the son of James McCloy, alias Fullarton, of Ballochindryan and Jean Stewart, the daughter of John Stewart of Ascog. His grandfather is thought to have been Duncan, or Donald McCloy, minister at Kilmodan between at least 1609 and 1629, who was still alive as late as 1659, when he received a grant from the Synod of Argyll because of his poverty. Career Fullarton obtained the degree of Master of Arts Scotland Master of Arts from Glasgow University in 1665. Following his ordination, he was minister at Kilmodan from 1669 to 1684 and at Paisley between 1684 and 1689, whence he was ejected at the Glorious Revolution Revolution . Robert Wodrow recorded in 1703 that Fullarton was present with other Episcopal clergy at a service in Glasgow to commemorate the execution of Charles I of England Charles I , and he also preached there. The connection with Paisley had not been broken, and Fullarton was at the deathbed of the young Lady Dundonald in Paisley in 1710, and later celebrated Holy Communion for the widowed Earl in Paisley Abbey , the first instance of Communion at Yule so openly celebrated in this country, according to Wodrow. By 1712, Wodrow considered Fullarton to be the man of that Episcopalian party in most repute in this country. John Fullarton was consecrated bishop by the John Paterson archbishop Archbishop of Glasgow , the Alexander Rose Bishop of Edinburgh and Robert Douglas bishop Bishop of Dunblane on 25 January 1705 and was elected Bishop of Edinburgh and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church Primus in April 1720, with limited metropolitan powers, following the death of Dr Alexander Rose .
