  1. The Order of the Pug

unreferenced date November 2011 Orphan date February 2009 File Loge des Mopses.png thumb The Order of the Pug The Order of the Mops was a para Freemasonry Masonic society founded by Roman Catholics. It is believed that it was founded in 1740 by Klemens August of Bavaria to bypass the papal bull Eminenti Apostolatus Specula of 1738. The constitution of the Order of the Pug allowed women to become members, as long as they were Catholic. The pug was chosen as a symbol of loyalty, trustworthiness and steadiness. Members called themselves Mops, novices were initiated wearing a dog collar and had to scratch at the door to get in. The novices were blindfolded and led around a carpet with symbols on it nine times while the Pugs of the Order barked loudly to test the steadiness of the newcomers. During the initiation, the novices also had to kiss a Mops s porcelain backside under its tail as an expression of total devotion. Members of the Order carried a Pug medallion made of silver. In 1745, a disclosure script was published in Amsterdam with the title L ordre des Franc Ma ons trahi et le Secret des Mopses r v l which included the ritual and two graphics. Taxobox name Foxglove Pug regnum Animal ia phylum Arthropod a classis Insect a ordo Lepidoptera familia Geometridae genus Eupithecia species E. pulchellata binomial Eupithecia pulchellata binomial authority James Francis Stephens Stephens , 1831 The Foxglove Pug Eupithecia pulchellata is a moth of the family Geometer moth Geometridae . It has a scattered distribution across Europe , closely following the range of its food plant. Where present it can be very common. The wingspan is 18 22  mm and the species is quite colourful for the genus, with alternating bands of dark brown and buffish orange on the forewings. In some races the buff bands can be very pale. The hindwings are similarly marked but generally paler. It flies at night in May and June ref flight season and is attracted to light. The larva is quite variable but is normally yellowish green with purplish markings. It usually feeds inside foxglove flower s. Soon after hatching it seals the mouth of the flower with silk and feeds on the reproductive parts of the flower. The Corolla flower corolla of the flower persists on the plant after those of uninfested flowers have fallen. Somewhat surprisingly, given this very specialized feeding ecology, it has also been recorded feeding on Brassica oleracea in Malta ref http www.nhm.ac.uk jdsml research curation research projects hostplants list.dsml?searchPageURL index.dsml&Familyqtype starts with&Family &PFamilyqtype starts with&PFamily &Genusqtype starts with&Genus eupithecia&PGenusqtype starts with&PGenus &Speciesqtype starts with&Species pulche&PSpeciesqtype starts with&PSpecies &Country &sort Family Natural History Museum HOSTS database ref .
