JehielbenAsher was a Judaism Jewish liturgy liturgical poet flourished in Andalusia in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. He was the author of four liturgical poems, mentioned by Zunz L. G. p. 520 , and of a dirge of twenty five strophe s on the persecution of the Jews in Spain in 1391. Jehiel was also the author of a poetical work entitled Ma aseh Ugah, published, together with Jedaiah ben Abraham Bedersi Profiat Duran s Iggeret Al Tehi Ka Aboteka, at Constantinople about 1577. Firkovich claims to have seen in the possession of a Karaite of Constantinople named Joseph im i a manuscript containing a poem by Jehiel, entitled Ha Rewayah. nocitations date May 2011 Jehiel of Pisa died February 10, 1492 was a philanthropist and scholar of Pisa . The wealth he had acquired in the banking business he spent liberally for charitable purposes. Himself a scholar, he extended his protection to Jewish learning. Johanan Alemanno , the teacher of Pico di Mirandola , seems to have lived for years in Jehiel s house. Jehiel was on intimate terms with Don Isaac Abravanel , with whom he carried on a correspondence. In 1472 Abravanel induced Lopo de Almeida and the physician Joao Sezira, Alfonso s ambassadors to the pope, to pay Jehiel a visit. They carried costly presents to Jehiel s wife from Abravanel, and valuable manuscripts, among which were copies of Abravanel s own works, to Jehiel. The end of Jehiel s life was embittered by the apostasy of one of his daughters. On that occasion Abravanel wrote him a letter of consolation, in which he reminded him of the saying of the Rabbis M. . 20b that the result of education is not dependent upon the merits of the parents thorns grow in every field among the ears of corn. Gedaliah ibn Ya ya relates that most of Jehiel s fortune was spent in aiding the Spanish expulsion refugees of Spain . Jehielben Solomon Heilprin ca. 1660 ca. 1746 was a Jews of Lithuania Lithuanian rabbi, kabalist , and chronicler. He was a descendant of Solomon Luria , and traced his genealogy back through Rashi to the tannaim tanna Johanan ha Sandlar . He was rabbi of Glusk , government of Minsk , until 1711, when he was called to the rabbinate of Minsk, where he officiated also as head of the yeshibah until his death. Heilprin was one of the most eminent Talmudists of his time. He was opposed to casuistry , and on this account succeeded in grouping around him a great number of liberal minded pupils. For a long time he had to sustain a hard struggle with Aryeh L b benAsher , who, while still a young man, had founded a yeshibah at Minsk, which at first was very flourishing. Aryeh L b attacked Heilprin s method of teaching, and the antagonism between them spread to their pupils. Later, Aryeh L b, being obliged to assist his father in the district rabbinate, neglected his yeshibah, which was ultimately closed, and Heilprin was no longer molested. Heilprin devoted a part of his time to the study of Kabala , on which subject he wrote a work. He was opposed to giving approbations to new books, deviating, as he himself says, only twice from his general principle in this regard. He set out for Spain July 18, 1283, and arrived at Toledo April 7, 1285, consuming almost two years in his journey. He does not appear to have stayed long in Toledo, for in 1286 he married the daughter of his oldest brother, Jehiel, who is not known to have left Germany before 1305. After her death he married the daughter of Solomon, another brother of his. orphan date May 2010 Aaron BenAsher of Karlin June 6, 1802 June 23, 1872 , known as Rabbi Aaron II of Karlin , was one of the most famous rabbis of the asidim in northwestern Russia . He had an immense number of followers, and many thousands of them used to visit him annually, about the time of the Jewish New Year , as is the custom among that sect. Notwithstanding his severity of manner and the not infrequent rudeness of his behavior, he was highly esteemed by his adherents. He reigned in Karlin Pinsk Karlin , near Pinsk , in the government of Minsk currently in Belarus , in succession to his father and his grandfather, Aaron ben Jacob . A few years before his death he had a quarrel with a rich family of Karlin and removed from there to Stolin , a town several miles distant. Considering the amount of business that the yearly influx of strangers brought to the city where he resided, his removal was regarded as a misfortune for Karlin. He died, aged seventy years and seventeen days, in Malinovka , near Dubno , in Volhynia , while on a journey to the wedding of his granddaughter, and was succeeded by his son, Asher of Stolin , whose chief claim to distinction is that he spent most of his time at the mi wah bath . Aryeh Leib benAsher Gunzberg c. 1695 June 23, 1785 , also known as the Shaagas Aryeh Hebrew , was an Lithuanian Jews Litvak rabbi and author. Born in Lithuania , c. 1695, he was a Rabbinical casuist . At one time Gunzberg was rabbi in Pinsk , and then later founded a yeshivah in Minsk . Here however he engaged in hostile dispute with the Gaon Yechiel Halpern , whose supporters eventually drove Gunzberg from the city. His most famous book Shaagas Aryeh Hebrew language Hebrew , , for Roar of the Lion was first published in Frankfurt am Main in 1755 and is still frequently quoted in rabbinical debate, as are many of his responsa . After its publication he became known as the Shaagas Aryeh after his book. He became rabbi in Metz in France in 1765, but an early argument with his congregation led to him refusing to enter the synagogue except to give four sermons a year. Despite this he retained his post until his demise, and died at in Metz on June 23, 1785. Prior to his becoming Rabbi of Metz he was a Judge in a Rabbinical Court that was adjudicating a monetary dispute.
