  1. Association (statistics)

In statistics , an association is any relationship between two measured quantities that renders them independence probability theory statistically dependent . ref Upton, G., Cook, I. 2006 Oxford Dictionary of Statistics , 2nd Edition, OUP. ISBN 978 0 19 954145 4 ref The term association refers broadly to any such relationship, whereas the narrower term correlation refers to a linear relationship between two quantities. There are many statistical measures of association that can be used to infer the presence or absence of an association in a sample of data . Examples of such measures include the product moment correlation coefficient , used mainly for quantitative measurements, and the odds ratio , used for dichotomous measurements. Other measures of association are the distance correlation , tetrachoric correlation coefficient , Goodman and Kruskal s lambda , Tschuprow s T and Cram r s V statistics Cram r s V In quantitative research, the term association is often used to emphasize that a relationship being discussed is not necessarily causality causal see correlation does not imply causation . 1. Coherence (statistics)

In probability theory and statistics , coherence can have two meanings. When dealing with personal probability assessments, or supposed probabilities derived in nonstandard ways, it is a property of self consistency across a whole set of such assessments. One way of expressing such self consistency is in terms of responses to various betting propositions, as described in relation to coherence philosophical gambling strategy . ref name D Dodge, Y. 2003 The Oxford Dictionary of Statistical Terms, OUP. ISBN 0 19 920613 9. ref The coherency principle in Bayesian decision theory is the assumption that personal probabilities follow the ordinary rules for probability calculations where the validity of these rules corresponds to the self consistency just referred to and thus that consistent decisions can be obtained from these probabilities. ref name D In time series analysis , and particularly in spectral analysis , it is used to describe the strength of association between two series where the possible dependence between the two series is not limited to simultaneous values but may include leading, lagged and smoothed relationships. ref name E Everitt, B.S. 2002 The Cambridge Dictionary of Statistics, CUP. 1. Probability and statistics

Unreferenced date December 2009 Probability and statistics are two related but separate academic discipline s. Statistical analysis often uses probability distribution s, and the two topics are often studied together. However, probability theory contains much that is of mostly of mathematics mathematical interest and not directly relevant to statistics. Moreover, many topics in statistics are independent of probability theory.
