The Midwestern Universities Research Association MURA was a collaboration between 15 universities with the goal of designing and building a particle accelerator for the Midwestern United States . It existed between 1953 1967, but could not achieve its goal in this time and lost funding. It was thought that President John F. Kennedy would have supported the MURA machine, while one of President Lyndon B. 1. Association (astronomy)

distinguish stellar association Confusing date January 2010 An association astronomy is a combined or co added group of astronomical exposures from which cosmic rays have been removed. WFPC2 associations constitute one type of association and are tools in the Hubble Space Telescope HST archive for using data from the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 WFPC2 . Associations were introduced in the HST archive at the beginning of 1998. Since then, astronomers have been able to retrieve on the fly re calibrated co added WFPC2 images that have already been cleaned of cosmic rays from the Space Telescope European Coordinating Facility ST ECF , the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre CADC and Space Telescope Science Institute STScI archives. History Image Cdf.o comb.jpg thumb 500px right Association example from The Chandra Deep Field South. Left single exposure right Association The development of a new association pipeline was started in early 1999. Standard cross correlation techniques were used to measure the offsets among WFPC2 observations belonging to the same proposal and using the same filter. CADC and ST ECF released the second generation of WFPC2 Associations, known as type B associations in November 2001. Type B associations contain all the exposures that follow the same criterion of association as type A, but do not depend on the availability or the accuracy of the jitter information. The fuel elements consisted of bundles of flat plates rather than rods. The core was cooled by light water. The fuel elements were situated within six open topped aluminium tanks containing water that were separated and surrounded by graphite. This meant that moderation was part by the water within the tanks and part by graphite with graphite serving as the reflector. Reactivity control was provided by four semaphore signal type control blades held by magnetic clutches to shafts that could be driven by geared electric motors. The blades were made of cadmium plates rivetted to aluminium blades. The insertion of a single blade was sufficient to shut down the fission chain reaction. The simple control system did not use voting logic. Any detected fault resulted in an immediate scram. Power failure also produced an immediate scram .... 1. Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy

The Combined Array for Research in Millimeter wave Astronomy CARMA is an astronomical instrument comprising 23 radio telescopes. These telescopes form an astronomical interferometer where all the signals are combined in a purpose built computer a correlator to produce high resolution astronomical images. Image CARMA Panoramic cropped2.jpg thumb 400px CARMA in D array Location According to the CARMA observatory catalog, the median height of all telescope pads is at an elevation of 2196.223 m 7205.807 ft . The observatory is located in the Inyo Mountains to the east of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory , at a site called Cedar Flat , accessed through Westgard Pass . The high elevation site was chosen to minimize millimeter wave absorption and phase decoherence by atmospheric water vapor. Until the Atacama Large Millimeter Array in Chile is in full operation, this instrument will be the most powerful millimeter wave interferometer in the world.
