  1. Mating yard

unreferenced article date June 2009 A Mating Yard is a term for an apiary which consists primarily of queen mating nuc s and hives which raise drones. A Queen bee must mate in order to lay fertilized eggs, which develop into workers. Mating nucs A Mating Yard allows dozens of queens to mate and begin to lay. The hives in a mating yard are primarily mating nucs or drone producing hives. Mating nucs are smaller than normal nucs, often containing non self sustaining numbers of bees. The beekeeper will replenish the workers in a mating nuc by shaking additional bees into mating nucs when their population is running low. Drone producing hives Drone producing hives produce abnormally large numbers of drones. By using drone foundation in the brood nest a beekeeper can produce a large drone population to saturate the Drone Congregation area with drones of a given stock. Saturating the drone congregation area improves the odds that the queen will mate with drones of a particular lineage, but does not guarantee it. Open Mating This method of mating is called open mating. Once a queen is mated and the beekeeper observes the laying pattern, the queen will be removed, caged and sold. The mating nuc will receive another queen cell or virgin queen and the process will repeat. Category Beekeeping bee stub ...   more details

  1. Mating type

Expert subject Genetics date February 2009 Mating types are molecular mechanisms that regulate compatibility in sexually reproducing eukaryote s. They occur in isogamous and anisogamous species. Depending on the group, different mating types are often referred to by numbers, letters, or simply and instead of male and female , that refer sexes or differences in size between gametes. Syngamy can only take place between gametes carrying different mating types. Reproduction regulated by mating types is especially prevalent in Fungus fungi . Ascomycete s usually have two mating types referred to as Mat 1 1 and Mat 1 2 or in the case of yeast as a and alpha . Mating type genes in ascomycetes are called idiomorphs rather than alleles due to the uncertainty of the origin by common descent. The proteins they encode are transcription factors that regulate both the early and late stages of the sexual cycle. Heterothallic ascomycetes produce gametes that present a single Mat idiomorph and Fertilisation syngamy will only be possible between gametes carrying complementary mating types. On the other hand, homothallic ascomycetes produce gametes that can fusion with every other gamete in the population including its own mitotic descendants most often because each haploid contains the two alternate forms of the Mat locus in its genome ref cite journal last Giraud first T. coauthors et al. title Mating system of the anther smut fungus Microbotryum violaceum Selfing under heterothallism journal Eukaryotic Cell year 2008 volume 7 pages 765 775 ref . 1. Mating in fungi

Mating in fungi is a complex process governed by mating type s. Research on fungal mating has focused on only a few model species ref Turgeon B.G. 1998 Application of mating type gene technology to problems in fungal biology. Annual review of Phytopathology. 36 115 137 ref . Since not all of the fungi reproduce sexually and many that do are isogamy isogamous , the terms male and female do not apply to this Kingdom taxonomy kingdom . Homothallic species are able to mate with themselves, while in heterothallic species only isolates of opposite mating types can mate. Mating between isogamous fungi may consist only of a transfer of nuclei from one cell to another. Citation needed date October 2008 Vegetative incompatibility within species often prevent a fungal isolate from mating with another isolate. Isolates of the same incompatibility group do not mate or mating does not lead to successful offspring. High variation has been reported Citation needed date October 2008 including same chemotype mating, sporophyte to gametophyte mating and biparental transfer of mitochondria. Mating type A picture of the mating type mechanism has begun to emerge from studies of particular fungi such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast . The mating type genes are located in homeobox and encode enzyme s for production of pheromone s and pheromone Receptor biochemistry receptors . EDIT BELOW THIS LINE Mate preferences in humans refers to why one human chooses or chooses not to mate with another human and their reasoning why Evolutionary Psychology Mating see Evolutionary Psychology, mating . Men and women have been observed having different criteria as what makes a good or ideal mate gender differences . A potential mate s socioeconomic status has also been seen as having a noticeable effect, especially in developing areas where social status is more emphasized. ref Stone, Shackelford, & Buss 2008 Socioeconomic Development and Shifts in Mate Preferences. Evolutionary Psychology Vol. 6 ref Gender Differences Several studies have shown that females are more selective of their mates than males are, with men requiring less time to consent to sexual behavior than women, as well as having a greater desire for short term relationships and wanting a higher number of sexual partners in their lifetime ref Schmitt, Shackelford, & Buss 2001 Are men really more oriented toward short term mating than women? 1. Triparental mating

Orphan date April 2012 Triparental mating is a form of Bacterial conjugation where a conjugative plasmid present in one bacterial strain assists the transfer of a mobilizable plasmid present in a second bacterial strain into a third bacterial strain. Plasmid s are introduced into bacteria for such purposes as transformation genetics transformation , cloning , or transposon mutagenesis. Triparental matings can help overcome some of the barriers to efficient plasmid mobilization. For instance, if the conjugative plasmid and the mobilizable plasmid are members of the same incompatibility group they do not need to stably coexist in the second bacterial strain for the mobilizable plasmid to be transferred. Process Requirements A helper strain , Carrying a conjugative plasmid such as the F plasmid that codes for genes required for Bacterial conjugation conjugation and DNA transfer. A donor strain , Carrying a mobilizable plasmid that can utilize the transfer functions of the conjugative plasmid. A recipient strain , you wish to introduce the mobilizable plasmid into. Five to seven days are required to determine if the plasmid was successfully introduced into the new bacterial strain and confirm that there is no carryover of the helper or donor strain. In contrast, Electroporation does not require a helper or donor strain. This helps avoid possible contamination with other strains. The introduction of the plasmid can be verified in the recipient strain in two days, making electroporation a faster and more efficient method of transformation. Silvestria 109 65pp 4 chapters ref With DPM the number of new families created is equal to the number of individuals mated. DPM allows to efficiently utilise positive assortative mating for more efficient use of the breeding population members for deployment to seed orchards. ref Ruotsalainen, S. 2002. Managing breeding stock in the initiation of a long term tree breeding program. PhD thesis. Finnish Forest Research Institute, Research Papers 875., 95 61 p http www.metla.fi julkaisut mt 875 ref In comparison with single pair mating, DPM has the advantages that the genes from the individual are transmitted to next generation even if one of the crosses fails that safer estimates of breeding values of the parents get possible useful for seed orchard s, where tested trees are preferred and that genes from different ancestors have a better chance to combine. 1. Mating-type region

The mating type region is a specialized region in the genome s of some yeast and other fungi , usually organized into heterochromatin and possessing unique histone methylation patterns. The gene s in this region regulate the mating type of the organism and therefore determine key events in its biological life cycle life cycle , such as whether it will reproduce sexual reproduction sexually or asexual reproduction asexually . In fission yeast such as S. pombe , the formation and maintenance of the heterochromatin organization is regulated by RNA induced transcriptional silencing , a form of RNA interference responsible for genomic maintenance in many organisms. ref name Noma Noma K, Sugiyama T, Cam H, Verdel A, Zofall M, Jia S, Moazed D, Grewal S 2004 . RITS acts in cis to promote RNA interference mediated transcriptional and post transcriptional silencing . Nat Genet 36 11 1174 80. DOI 10.1038 ng1452 PMID 15475954 ref Mating type regions have also been well studied in budding yeast S. cerevisiae and in the fungus Neurospora crassa . ref name Staben Staben C, Yanofsky C. 1990 .
