Abolition of the SlaveTrade The Parishioners of West Calder played a small part in the abolitionist movement of the late eighteenth century, as reported in the Edinburghshire Log of 1792. West Calder Parish posted a petition in advocating in the strongest terms that abolition of slavery was essential. Within 9 days of the publication of the document, 2 April 1792 William Wilberforce moved that the trade ought to be abolished an amendment in favour of gradual abolition was carried, and it was finally resolved that the trade should cease on 1 January 1796. When a similar motion was brought forward to the House of Lords the consideration of it was postponed to the following year, in order to give time for the examination of witnesses by a committee of the House. International Day for the Remembrance of the SlaveTrade and its Abolition , August 23 of each year, the day designated by UNESCO to memorialize the transatlantic slavetrade . That date was chosen by the UNESCO Executive Board s adoption of resolution 29 C 40 at its 29th session. Circular CL 3494 of July 29, 1998 from the Director General invited Ministers of Culture to promote the day. The date is significant because, during the night of August 22 to August 23, 1791 on the island of Saint Domingue now known as Haiti , an Haitian Revolution uprising began which set forth events which were a major factor in the Abolitionism abolition of the transatlantic slavetrade . UNESCO Member States organize events every year on that date, inviting participation from young people, educators, artists and intellectuals. As part of the goals of the intercultural UNESCO project, The Slave Route Project The Slave Route , it is an opportunity for collective recognition and focus on the historic causes, the methods and the consequences of slavery .
