  1. Variations for Winds, Strings and Keyboards

Variations for Winds, Strings and Keyboards is an orchestral piece composed in 1979 by Steve Reich . The piece is scored for oboes, flutes, full brass three trumpets, three trombones, and tuba , strings, pianos, and electric organs. Variations was Reich s first orchestral piece. Structure and Instrumentation Reich describes the piece as being in the form of a chaconne , variations on a repeated short harmonic progression. The piece has three variations of a complete cycle of harmonic progressions C minor to C flat, and then gradually back through several keys to C minor , moving one note of a chord at a time, a process of nonchord tone Suspension suspension . The three movements are approximately six, ten, and nine minutes. The winds and keyboards three oboes doubled by electric organs, or three flutes doubled by pianos and electric organs play the melody throughout. Harmonies are played by the strings doubled by organs. The brass add to the harmonies in the first and last sections of the piece. The chord form for the piece was taken from the opening of the second movement of B la Bart k B la Bart k s Second Piano Concerto. Reich initially wrote the first movement for only strings, with a significant amount of consonance and dissonance dissonance . He discarded that effort but kept the basic idea of suspensions, inverting the chords within a middle register to reduce the dissonance. Premieres Variations was commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony , and is dedicated to Betty Freeman . A chamber orchestra version of the piece was performed at Carnegie Hall on February 19, 1980. This was a preview performance, using Reich s own musicians, to give Reich a better sense of the piece s sound before its official debut. 1. Continuity editing

Refimprove date November 2009 Original research date March 2010 Continuity editing is the predominant style of film editing and video editing in the post production process of filmmaking of narrative film s and television program s. The purpose of continuity editing is to smooth over the inherent discontinuity of the editing process and to establish a logical coherence between shots. In most films, logical coherence is achieved by cutting to continuity, which emphasizes smooth transition of time and space. However, some films incorporate cutting to continuity into a more complex classical cutting technique, one which also tries to show psychological continuity of shots. The Montage filmmaking montage technique relies on symbolic association of ideas between shots rather than association of simple physical action for its continuity. If the maturing B cells strongly interact with these self antigens, they undergo death by apoptosis. Negative selection is important to avoid the production of B cells that could cause autoimmune diseases . They can avoid apoptosis by modifying the sequence of light chain V and J genes components of the antigen receptor so that it has a different specificity and may not recognize self antigens anymore. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 for non linear editing of video non linear editing system Non destructive editing is a form of editing signals where the original content is not modified in the course of editing instead the edits themselves are edited by video editing software on a non linear editing system NLE . clarify date August 2011 A pointer based playlist&mdash effectively an edit decision list EDL &mdash is used to keep track of edits. Each time the edited audio or video is played back or accessed, it is reconstructed from the original source and the EDL. Although this process is more computationally intensive than rendering each edit, changing the edits themselves can be almost instantaneous, and it prevents further generation loss as the audio or video is edited. When videotape was first developed in 1956 by Ampex Ampex Corporation , the only way to edit was to physically cut the tape with a razor blade and splice segments together. While the footage excised in this process was not technically destroyed , continuity was lost and the footage was generally discarded. In 1963 with the introduction of the Ampex Editec, video tape could be edited electronically with a process known as linear video editing by selectively copying or dubbing the original footage to another tape called a master . The original recordings are not destroyed or altered in this process. Non linear editing, originally developed in 1971 by CMX Systems CMX and now the most prevalent form of editing video and film, is also non destructive Un edited original footage is digitized into electronic files stored digitally on a computerized disk based system. The edited end product often referred to as a sequence or playlist is simply a series of digital files played back out of the editing computer. In this case, neither the original footage nor the digitized source files are destroyed in the editing process. refimprove date November 2011 Video editing software , is application software which handles the post production video editing of digital video sequences on a computer non linear editing system NLE . It has replaced traditional flatbed celluloid film editing tools and analogue video tape to tape online editing machines. NLE software is typically based on a timeline interface paradigm where sections of moving image video recordings, known as clips, are laid out in sequence and played back. The NLE offers a range of tools for trimming, splicing, cutting and arranging clips across the timeline. As digital NLE systems have advanced their toolset their role has expanded and most consumer and professional NLE systems alike now include a host of features for colour manipulation, titling and visual effects, as well as tools for editing and mixing audio in conjunction with the image. Once a project is complete the NLE system can then be used to export to movie in a variety of formats in context which may range from broadcast TAPE formats to compressed formats for the internet, DVD and mobile devices.
