August Joseph Ignaz Toepler September 7, 1836, Br hl Br hl bei Bonn March 6, 1912, Dresden was a Germany German physicist known for his experiments in electrostatics . In 1864 he applied Foucault s knife edge test for telescope mirrors to the analysis of fluid flow and the shock wave . 1. August Oetker

Dr. August Oetker January 6, 1862 &ndash January 10, 1918 was born in Obernkirchen , Germany and died in Bielefeld , Germany . He invented baking powder , although Alfred Bird of England is also credited with inventing baking powder in 1843. In 1891, he bought the Aschoffsche pharmacy in Bielefeld and developed a baking agent, which was designed to ensure the success of the baking process. From 1893, Oetker distributed his invention under the brand name Backin , thus laying the basis for the family owned company, called Oetker Gruppe . This company still uses the very same recipe to produce baking powder. On September 21, 1903, Oetker filed a patent for his Procedure for making long lasting baking powder or ready to bake flour . Due to successful marketing, Oetker s products sold quite well and soon the old pharmacy had turned into a successful company. In 1900, Oetker built his first manufacturing plant and by 1906 had sold 50 million packages of Backin. Prior to Oetker, Justus von Liebig and his American student, Eben Horsford , had already discovered baking powder. However, Oetker targeted mainly private households with his products whereas Horsford targeted bakeries. Later, Oetker s grandson Rudolf August Oetker took over the company. 1. August Mau

Image August Mau.JPG thumb right August Mau August Mau 15 October 1840 6 March 1909 was a prominent Germany German History of art art historian and Archaeology archaeologist who worked with the Deutsches Arch ologisches Institut while studying and classifying the Ancient Rome Roman paintings at Pompeii , which was destroyed with the town of Herculaneum by volcano volcanic eruption in 79 AD. The paintings were in remarkably good condition due to the preservation by the volcanic ash that covered the city. Mau first divided these paintings into the four Pompeian Styles still used as a classification. Mau was born in Kiel , where he read Classical Philology at the University of Kiel , and then at the University of Bonn . He moved to Rome, for reasons of ill health, in 1872, where he became Secretary to the German Archaeological Institute and catalogued the holdings of its extensive library. His interests lay above all in Pompeii, with inscriptions and Roman wall paintings, where he built upon the earlier work published by Wolfgang Helbig and Giuseppe Fiorelli .
