The shields along the top and the carved decorative motifs were drawn from medieval sources. The motifs include Crace s initials, a plummet carpenter s tool as an emblem of his honesty, and a compass to indicate his ability to keep within his estimates. Many designers of the Victorian period were inspired by the art of the Middle Ages, but Pugin was probably the greatest and most ardent exponent of the Gothic Revival style. The cabinet was the grandest piece in the group of furniture designed by Pugin and made by Crace for the Medieval Court in the Great Exhibition of 1851. As Crace was a judge for Class XXVI furniture and the cabinet was exhibited in his name, it was not eligible for a medal. A prolific designer, best remembered for his decoration of the Houses of Parliament, Pugin exhausted himself and died the year after this cupboard was made, aged only forty. The Victoria and Albert Museum bought the cupboard directly from the 1851 Exhibition, making it one of its earliest acquisitions. CharlesAugustus Aiken 1827 1892 was a clergyman and academic. Biography He was born in Manchester, Vermont in 1827 to John Aiken and Harriet Adams Aiken. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1846, and went on to Andover Theological Seminary , where he graduated in 1853. He married Sarah Noyes on October 17, 1854, and was ordained a pastor of the Congregational church in Yarmouth, Maine , that same year. In 1858, he took the position of professor of Latin languages and literature at Dartmouth, remaining in that position through 1866. He left there to teach at the Princeton University then, and continued there through 1869. In 1869, he became the president of Union College . Through his extensive work mapping the longest river in western Europe he became known as The Father of the Danube. Biography Hartley was born in 1825 at Heworth, Tyne and Wear Heworth , near Gateshead , County Durham . Like most engineers of his generation he was engaged in railway work in the early part of his career, but subsequently he devoted himself to hydraulic engineering and the improvement of estuaries and harbors for the purposes of navigation. He spent the earlier part of his career teaching in the United States of America, but he later settled in Italy, near Florence, and it was there between 1918 and 1936 that he wrote most of his works. Early life and studies CharlesAugustus Strong was born in America on 28 November 1862, at Haverhill, Massachusetts . He was the eldest son of Augustus Hopkins Strong . In 1865 his father moved the family to Cleveland, Ohio , where they became acquainted with the family of John D. Rockefeller . Strong received education at the Rochester Theological Seminary , where his father was President. He entered the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire . Strong was a student of Latin and Greek, and edited the school paper. In July 1881 he travelled to Germany , where he studied at the G tersloh Gymnasium. His father, a man of independent fortune, was an original member of the Theosophical Society formed December 1783 by Robert Hindmarsh for the study of Emanuel Swedenborg s writings. Tulk was educated at Westminster School , of which he became captain, and was noted for his singing in the abbey choir.
