EdwardAugustus Kendall , translator, social campaigner and miscellaneous writer, was born about 1776. He died at Pimlico 14 October 1842. ref Gentleman s Magazine, New Series, XVIII , 671. ref He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries . Though Americans remember him for his Travels through the Northern Parts of the United States , published in 1809, Kendall s main claim to fame are his books for children, in which he represented the characters of animals in new ways, giving them a speaking voice. Whilst there were other writers, including Dorothy Kilner , Sarah Trimmer , Anna Laetitia Barbauld and her brother John Aikin , who made smaller contributions, Kendall played a major and crucial part in shifting the representation of animals in literature from the fabulous, the allegorical and the satirical to the naturalistic and empathetic. His Keeper s Travels in Search of His Master , Crested Wren , and Burford Cottage and its Robin Red Breast , are the natural predecessors of The Water Babies and Wind in the Willows . Employing new narrative techniques for representing thought in fiction, Kendall pioneered writers attempts to imagine and describe the experiences of animals. During 1807 and 1808, Kendall travelled through the northern parts of the United States of America, as a result of which he published his historically important three volume topographical dictionary Travels through the northern parts of the United States . Following this, Kendall spent a number of years in Canada working for the Hudson s Bay Company after which spent time in British Raj British India and the Cape Colony . Following his return to England, in 1817 Kendall issued proposals for establishing in London a philanthropic institution to be called The Patriotic Metropolitan Colonial Institution , to assist new settlers to British colonies. Hough Priory was a priory in Hough on the Hill , Lincolnshire , England . The manor on which the priory of Hough was afterwards built was granted by Henry I of England Henry I to his abbey of St. Mary de Voto at Cherbourg , for Austin canons. The parent abbey itself at its foundation contained only an abbot and four canons, and the cell having no other endowment than the manor and church of Hough, was intended for the support of a prior with a single chaplain for his companion, to maintain divine service for the soul of the king and his family. ref name Page Page, William, Alien houses The priory of Hough , A History of the County of Lincoln Volume 2 1906 , pp. 242 43., Public domain text , accessed via http www.british history.ac.uk report.aspx?compid 38087 British History online ref The prior was at first bound to send a fixed sum of money to Cherbourg every year after the beginning of the wars with France this pension was transferred to the Exchequer. Early in the fourteenth century the assistant chaplain was withdrawn, as the revenue was not sufficient to support two canons any longer, and in 1340, the prior himself was reduced to such straits that he had to beseech the king for remission of his arrears, amounting to 55 marks. An inquisition of the property was taken in 1349, when it was again found almost impossible to pay the pension appointed.
