for mechanical action in pipe organs tracker action Unreferenced date October 2006 A mechanical organ is an organ that is self playing, rather than played by a musician . Usually, mechanical organs are pipe organs although some instruments were built using reeds similar to those found in a harmonium . Since the 1950s, some instruments have been built using electronics to generate the sound, though still operated by mechanical or pneumatic means. From the 1990s pipe organs have been built that are operated by MIDI rather than the earlier mechanical means. Originally, the music for mechanical organs was stored by pins on a large barrel. Such instruments were called barrel organ s. Such organs only have a very limited repertoire, both in the number of musical selections that could be stored, and the length of tune that could be accommodated. In the 1890s, book music was invented. This meant that the length of music was no longer constrained. Being physically much smaller than a barrel for a similar instrument, it is much easier to manipulate the music, and so a greater variety of music could be played. Rather than the book music, some instruments are operated by a music roll . The mechanical bond is a type of chemical bond found in mechanically interlocked molecular architectures such as catenane s and rotaxane s. Unlike classical molecular structures, interlocked molecules consist of two or more separate components which are not connected by chemical i.e. covalent bonds. These structures are true molecules and not a supramolecular species, as each component is intrinsically linked to the other resulting in a mechanical bond which prevents dissociation without cleavage of one or more covalent bonds. Mechanical bond is a relatively new term and at this point has limited usage in chemical literature relative to more well established bonds, such as covalent, hydrogen, or ionic bonds. inline date December 2010 Mechanical impedance is a measure of how much a structure resists motion when subjected to a given force. It relates forces with velocities acting on a mechanical system. The mechanical impedance of a point on a structure is the ratio of the force applied at a point to the resulting velocity at that point. Mechanical impedance is the inverse of mechanical admittance or mobility. The mechanical impedance is a function of the frequency math omega math of the applied force and can vary greatly over frequency. At resonance frequencies, the mechanical impedance will be lower, meaning less force is needed to cause a structure to move at a given velocity. The simplest example of this is when a child pushes another on a swing. For the greatest swing amplitude, the frequency of the pushes must be near the resonant frequency of the system. math mathbf Z omega mathbf F omega mathbf v omega math Where, math mathbf F math is the force vector, math mathbf v math is the velocity vector, math mathbf Z math is the impedance matrix and math omega math is the angular frequency. Mechanical impedance is the ratio of a scalar potential potential e.g. force to a flow e.g. velocity where the arguments of the real or imaginary parts of both increase linearly with time. Examples of potentials are force, sound pressure, voltage, temperature. Examples of flows are velocity, volume velocity, current, heat flow. Impedance is the reciprocal of mobility. If the potential and flow quantities are measured at the same point then impedance is referred as driving point impedance otherwise, transfer impedance. Resistance the real part of an impedance. Reactance the imaginary part of an impedance. See also Stiffness Linear response function Electrical impedance References Foundations of Engineering Acoustics , Chapter 4, F.J.
