Ghost Call is a term used for a telephone call that you answer that doesn t have any one on the other end of the call. A ghost call is also a term used in managing IP PBX systems. Ghost calls on the lines that cannot be explained or are some residual output of one Real time Transport Protocol or RTP stream interacting with the PBX. Causes This is generally caused by a neglected Autodialer or indirectly through consequences of restrictions applied to autodialers used for telemarketing by the FCC that restricts how long they can tie up a phone line without causing inconvenience to the receiver or blocking emergency services. It could also fall under the accidental Pocket dialing category. Consequences A ghost call sometimes can be repetitive or completely tie up a phone line making it impossible to call 911 in an emergency. You may receive a ghost call sometimes once an hour, once a day or once a week. At a certain level when an Autodialer is completely overlooked and unmanaged or in extremely rare cases where a company goes under and an autodialer gets left running for years before it s discovered, this can be especially annoying as there is no one to complain to. I ve even heard of examples where an office was redesigned and many years later someone breaks into the wall to repair or remodel and there s an autodialer computer chunking away in the dark. Stopping The Calls Nowadays there are several websites that you can report your ghost dials to. They will track the number until it s repeatedly reported eventually gaining enough insight into where the machine is located and hopefully getting it shut down especially the abandoned ones. Improvements Today s Autodialer supposedly runs a smarter batch of software boasting a claim of less than a 2 hangup rate. Most telemarketing companies place 1000 s of calls an hour bringing that 2 back up to an annoying level however. In Fiction Ray Bradbury had at one time written a story about a telephone switch box that gained senti ... more details

Once the call has been answered, the autodialer either plays a recorded message or connects the call to a live person. When an autodialer plays a pre recorded message, it s often called voice broadcasting , or robocall ing . Some voice broadcasting messages ask the person who answers to press a button on their phone keypad, such as in opinion polls in which recipients are asked to press one digit if they support one side of an issue, or another digit if they support the other side. This type of call is often called outbound interactive voice response . When an autodialer connects an answered call to a live agent, it is often called a predictive dialer or power dialer . A predictive dialer uses realtime analysis to determine the optimal time to dial more numbers, whereas a power dialer simply dials a pre set number of lines when an agent finishes the previous call. A Safety confirmation system is a way of determining each day whether someone who lives alone is safe. All the person has to do is to press, before a time agreed with him or her, an I am okay button on a special landline or mobile phone handset that can also be used normally to make calls. The button press is transmitted to a monitoring centre and managed automatically. A follow up system is initiated if a user fails to confirm that they are okay. If the button is not pressed by the agreed time it can be taken as a passive request for contact.
