merge Autocorrection Autocomplete discuss Talk Autocorrection Merge discussion date November 2011 Autoreplace or AutoCorrect is a feature in some text editor s, word processor s and other programs that accept user input via Computer keyboard keyboard . It involves automatic replacement of a particular string with another one, usually one that is longer and harder to type, as myname with Lee John Nikolai Francois Al Rahman . This usually makes sense for only those phrases that are relatively common in the texts the user is editing. Replacement is usually done after the user has typed a space or return after the keyword. Autocomplete makes keyboard input faster and more accurate because generally more mistakes are made in typing longer phrases. Standalone tools Along with the text editor s built in feature, there are also standalone autoreplace autocomplete programs, which stay resident in computer memory memory and monitor user s input. These programs also automatically replace a particular input string with another one and bring the autoreplace and autocomplete features to any program which involves text typing. Command history is a feature in many command line interpreter operating system shells , computer algebra programs, and other Computer software software that allows the user to recall, edit and rerun previous commands. History was first introduced by Bill Joy ref http www.kitebird.com csh tcsh book csh intro.pdf An Introduction to the C shell by Bill Joy . ref in the C shell in 1978. It quickly became popular because it made the C shell fast and easy to use. History has since become a standard feature in other shells, including Korn shell ksh , Bash Unix shell bash and Microsoft s cmd.exe . History addressed two important scenarios Executing the same command or a short sequence of commands over and over. An example might be a developer frequently compiling and running a program. Correcting mistakes or rerunning a command with only a small modification. In Joy s original C shell, the user could refer to a previous command by typing an exclamation, code code , followed by additional characters to specify a particular command, only certain words, or to edit it in some way before pasting it back into the command line. For example code code meant the entire previous command. code code meant just the last word of the previous command. code code abc meant the command that started with abc . The usual implementation today is to combine history with command line editing. The cursor keys are used to navigate up and down through the history list and left or right to anyplace on the line, where the user can simply type a desired change. But some implementations are Menu computing menu based The user presses a certain function key which displays a menu of recent commands, which the user can select one by typing a number. merge Autoreplace Autocorrection discuss Talk Autocorrection Merge discussion date November 2011 original research date July 2011 refimprove date July 2011 Autocomplete is a feature provided by many web browser s, e mail program s, search engine technology search engine interfaces, source code editor s, database query tools, word processor s, and command line interpreter s. Autocomplete involves the program predicting a word or phrase that the user wants to type in without the user actually typing it in completely. This feature is effective when it is easy to predict the word being typed based on those already typed, such as when there are a limited number of possible or commonly used words as is the case with e mail programs, web browser s, or command line interpreter s , or when editing text written in a highly structured, easy to predict language as in source code editor s . Autocomplete speeds up human computer interactions in environments to which it is well suited. Autocomplete features are often enabled by default, and disabling or defeating them can sometimes be difficult for users to accomplish. Citation needed date March 2012 In web browsers In web browser s, autocomplete is done in the address bar using items from the browser s history and in text boxes on frequently used pages, such as a search engine s search box. Autocomplete for web addresses is particularly convenient because the full addresses are often long and difficult to type correctly. HTML5 has an autocomplete form attribute. In e mail programs In e mail program s autocomplete is typically used to fill in the e mail addresses of the intended recipients. Generally, there are a small number of frequently used e mail addresses, hence it is relatively easy to use autocomplete to select between them. Like web addresses, e mail addresses are often long, hence typing them completely is inconvenient. For instance ... typed letters in context with previous letters. Its principal purpose is as part of the spell checker to correct common spelling or typing errors, saving time for the user. It is also used to automatically Typesetting format text or insert special characters by recognising particular character usage, saving the user from having to use more tedious functions. class wikitable border 1 cellpadding 5 cellspacing 0 align left Examples Input Output sic hide y yuor your r aboutit about it sic hide y where s where s bold bold italic italic Additional options include recognising words with two initial capital letters e.g. EXample and correcting them, capitalising the first letters of sentences, and correcting accidental use of caps lock e.g. eXAMPLE . The replacement list for text replacement can also be modified by the user, allowing the user to use shortcuts. If, for example, the user is writing an essay on the industrial revolution, a replacement key can be set up to replace the word ir with industrial revolution , saving the user time whenever he wants to type it. For users with the patience, this facility can even be used to create a complete keyboard shorthand system, along lines similar to those of Dutton Speedwords , but with short forms instantly replaced by full forms. Some stand alone programs allow global text replacement across the operating system, and apply to text typed into any other application. Clear Disadvantages Main Cupertino effect In certain situations, automatic corrections can cause problems. This is particularly so in technical and scientific writing. For example, the biochemical cyclic adenosine monophosphate is commonly referred to as cyclic AMP , which in turn is abbreviated to cAMP . A text replacement ... more details
