  1. Meal powder

Meal powder is the fine dust left over when black powder gunpowder is corned and screened to separate it into different grain sizes. It is used extensively in various pyrotechnic procedures, usually to prime other compositions. It can also be used in many fireworks to add power and substantially increasing the height of the firework. Mill meal powder is a mixture of potassium nitrate , charcoal and sulfur in the correct proportions 75 15 10 which has been ball milled to mix it intimately. It is used in the same way as commercial meal powder or can be pressed and corned to produce true black powder. To make meal powder or black powder, a chemist mixes the ingredients by mass, never by volume. These ingredients are processed in a ball mill , basically a spinning drum with non sparking ceramic or lead balls. The more time left in the mill, the more explosive the powder will be. One main reason to ball mill as opposed to other methods is because it presses sulfur and KNO sub 3 sub into the porous charcoal. This is a restored edge runner mill at Eleutherian Mills The term powder mill is usually used for a mill grinding mill that manufactures blackpowder , a type of gunpowder . A powder mill could be driven by windmill wind or water mill water power, and contained rollers for grinding the ingredients of gunpowder together, as well as presses and tumbling barrels and sieve s for compacting, granulating, and grading the powder. Powder mills were built with an eye towards mitigating the danger of explosion , usually with one or more walls built purposely weak so that the force of an accidental explosion could be directed towards an open field or a river. In 1802, the DuPont family started their industrial enterprises in the United States by building the Eleutherian Mills on the Brandywine Creek Christina River Brandywine Creek in Delaware . 1. Lift powder

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Lift powder is simply granulated black powder also known as gunpowder . It consists of potassium nitrate , sulfur , carbon , and dextrin . Dextrin acts as a water soluble glue to hold the black powder together, so when it dries it will be rock hard. Lift powder gets its name because it is used for such things as launching shells out of mortars in pyrotechnics . Pyrotechnicians use this because it has a fast burn rate but not so fast as to cause the mortar to explode or cause other damage. Lift powder is good for this application because normal black powder cannot burn fast enough to push a shell out of a mortar fast enough the shell would only go a few feet in the air. Lift powder does not burn so fast though, like flash powder , as to explode a mortar. A lift charge is an explosive charge. Manufacturing Lift powder This process is relatively simple. First take 100 grams of black powder and put it in a plastic ziploc bag. Second, take 10 grams of dextrin and mix that in also. Then, carefully pour a small amount of water. Mix well always by hand, not a machine . The mixture should become thick enough to stick together if squeezed between the fingers. If it is too dry, carefully add more water. Now, take an old spaghetti strainer and put all the wet lift powder into it and squeeze it out onto a paper plate. Let it dry in the sun for a day or two. Once it is dry, some of the pieces may be a bit large. Just crumble those down. Overall the granules should be about the size of medium sized cookie crumbs, about 10 20 mesh. It is one of the symbols of Prague, leading into the Old Town Prague Old Town . Dating from 1475, the Powder Tower was built as one of 13 gates to the city of Prague. When construction began, it was connected via the small bridge at the right of the photo to the royal palace. The tower was severely damaged in 1757 when Prague was occupied by the Prussians, but was eventually restored to its former glory in the 1870s and 1880s. File Jonathan Gardner Powder horn 1776 at the Concord Mass Museum.JPG thumb right 250px A powder horn and gun from the American Revolution found in the Concord Museum Image Powder horn PSF .png 150px thumb right Line art drawing of a powder horn. A powder horn was a device used to carry gunpowder , and was generally created from cow or buffalo horn. They were most commonly used with eighteenth century musket s, but were rendered obsolete by the development of breech loading fire arms, in particular, innovations brought about by John H. Hall soldier Hall , Christian Sharps Sharps , Christopher Miner Spencer Spencer and the later development of self contained Cartridge firearms cartridge s that were developed and marketed successfully by Oliver Winchester . The first known creator of one was a man named Michael London, who was famed for such creations. The use of animal horn along with nonferrous metal parts ensured that the powder would not be detonated by sparks during storage and loading. Horn was also naturally waterproof and already hollow inside. A number of period horns dating from the French and Indian war s throughout the American Revolution and beyond, have been preserved in private and other collections. Many examples shed light on the life and history of the individuals that used them, and can be classified as a unique medium of folk art .
