Dublin Corporation acquired Wood Quay gradually between 1950 and 1975, finally announcing that it would be the location of their new offices. Finds made during the initial excavation of the site led to a massive, but ultimately unsuccessful, public campaign to halt the development. Finds from the hastily excavated Wood Quay are now on display in the National Museum of Ireland . Most of the quay is now entirely occupied by Dublin City Council s Civic Offices. Two bridges cross the river at Wood Quay, one at the eastern and the other at the western end. The bridge at the eastern end is Grattan Bridge named after Henry Grattan , the famous Irish parliamentarian of the 18th century. This bridge which resembles Westminster Bridge in London was until the 18th century the most easterly and therefore the closest to the sea of the Liffey Bridges. The bridge at the westerly end of Wood Quay is O Donovan Rossa Bridge named after the 19th century fenian. Willington Quay is an area in the borough of North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear in northern England . It is situated on the north bank of the River Tyne , facing Jarrow , and between Wallsend and North Shields . It is served by the Howdon Metro station in Howdon . The area from 2006 onwards has been an area of new housing built on brownfield sites. The house building continues into 2012 and is changing the social and economic balance in the area. The area has also had a make over of the bowling green off Howdon Lane and further warehousing next to the bowling green has been demolished to make way for further new housing. The changes made recently at Willington Quay are now making it an attractive place to live within North Tyneside. Local government The area, originally in the parish of Wallsend, became an urban sanitary district in the late 19th century. The Local Government Act 1894 brought together the Howdon and Willington Quay USDs as an urban district of Northumberland . In 1910, the urban district became part of the borough of Wallsend . Image Lambton Quay.jpg thumb right The Mutual Life & Citizens Assurance Company Building MLC Building near the south end of Lambton Quay, at Hunter St Lambton Quay once known as Beach Street is the heart of the central business district of Wellington , the capital city of New Zealand . Originally, as the name implies, it was the high water line of the foreshore, and sometimes the sea would roll across the road and enter the shops on the opposite side. It was the site of the original settlement in 1840, which grew into Wellington. Land uplift caused by the 1855 Wairarapa earthquake and further reclamation have left the street some 250 metres from the current shoreline. Lambton Quay is named after John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham , the first chairman of directors of the New Zealand Company . Lambton Quay and neighbouring Willis Street form what is known locally as the Golden Mile . Much of the city s retail trade is now centred a little further south around Manners Street and Cuba Street, Wellington Cuba Street , but Lambton Quay remains a major commercial thoroughfare. It is also of administrative significance, with the New Zealand Parliament Buildings towards the northern end. The Wellington cenotaph is also located at this end, next to Parliament. Designed by Robert Matthew Johnson Marshall , construction began in 1993 and the building was officially opened by the Elizabeth II Queen on Monday 1 July 1996. Civil servants began moving to Victoria Quay in phases from autumn 1995 1996 before the official opening ceremony. Construction of this building kick started Leith s Edinburgh Waterfront regeneration programme proper. New luxury flats, converted Bonded warehouse bond warehouses , bistros, bars and restaurants followed. This regeneration is continuing today, with high rise construction work on reclaimed dockland just a few hundred metres behind Ocean Terminal ongoing.
