Some art historians discern the hands of other members of Verrocchio s workshop in the painting as well. The picture depicts the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist as recorded in the Biblical Gospels of Matthew s Gospel Matthew , Mark s Gospel Mark and Luke s Gospel Luke . The angel to the left is recorded as having been painted by the youthful Leonardo, a fact which has excited so much special comment and mythology, that the importance and value of the picture as a whole and within the uvre of Verrocchio is often overlooked. It is housed in the Uffizi Uffizi Gallery in Florence . History The commission of the work originated in 1480, when Perugino was decorating a chapel in the Old St. Peter s Basilica in Rome . Pope Sixtus IV was pleased by his work, and decided to commission him also the decoration of the new Chapel he had built in the Vatican Palace. Due to the size of the work, Perugino was later joined by a group of painters from Florence, including Sandro Botticelli Botticelli , Domenico Ghirlandaio Ghirlandaio and others. Perugino s assistants in the Sistine Chapel included Pinturicchio , Andrea d Assisi , Rocco Zoppo or, less likely, Lo Spagna or Bartolomeo della Gatta , but the attribution of details to them is disputed. Description The fresco of the Baptism of Christ is the first on the wall on the left of the altar, and parallels Moses Leaving to Egypt Pietro Perugino Moses Leaving to Egypt and the Circumcision of Elezier facing it on the opposite wall, also by Perugino s workshop. The baptism was in fact considered by Augustine and other early Christian writers as a kind of spiritual circumcision . The scene follows a symmetrical pattern, typical of Perugino. It is housed in the National Gallery, London . The panel was commissioned presumably some time about 1440 by the Camaldolese Monastery of Sansepolcro in Tuscany , originally part of a triptych . Its dating to Piero della Francesca s early career is evidenced by the strong relationship with the light painting of his master, Domenico Veneziano . It portrays Christ being baptised by St. John the Baptist John , his head surmounted by a dove representing the Holy Spirit Christianity Holy Spirit . Christ, John s hand, the bird and the bowl form an axis which divides the painting in two symmetrical parts. A second division is created by the tree on the left, which instead divides it according to the golden ratio . The three angels on the left wear different clothes and, in a break from traditional iconography, are not supporting Christ s garments, but are holding each other s hands, in a sort of way. This could be an allusion to the contemporary Council of Florence 1431 45 , whose goal was the unification of the Western and Eastern Churches. The Camaldolese monk and theology theologian , St. Ambrose Traversari 1439 , who had been Prior Prior General of the congregation Catholic Camaladolese congregation , had been a strong supporter of the union. Such symbolism is also suggested by the presence, behind the neophyte on the right, of figures dressed in an oriental fashion.
