refimprove date July 2008 Baptist Conservative Baptists is a name used to describe members of the Conservative Baptist Association of America an association formed in 1947 at Atlantic City, New Jersey Atlantic City , New Jersey , used loosely as the larger Conservative Baptist Movement , or used as a description of Baptists that hold a conservative viewpoint of theology in contrast to liberals . The terminology is often applied to members of the Southern Baptist Convention , whose recent history has seen a struggle between conservatives and moderates . Yet, when applied to individual Baptists in general, the term has little objective meaning, and often only means some individual Baptist is more conservative than another individual Baptist. 1. Union Baptists

Baptist Union Baptists trace their origin to the American Civil War , or war between the northern and southern United States . Baptist churches and associations, especially in border states, were rent asunder by this national conflict. Tensions over secession, war and reconstruction, as well as the fact that Primitive Baptists did not allow members to hold membership in secret societies, combined to incubate the Union Baptists . Many pro Union Primitive Baptist s joined Union Leagues, and were expelled from their churches and associations. The Mountain Union Association , formed in 1867 at Silas Creek church near Lansing, North Carolina , was the first Union Baptist association. The Mountain Union Association was instrumental in helping former slaves organize the New Covenant Association of Wilkes County in 1868. This distinction, at least in name, has persisted in the Appalachia s, and some churches and associations still consider themselves Union Baptists . There seems to be no doctrinal distinction between Union Baptists and Regular Baptist s. The Union Baptists mirror many traits of other Appalachian primivistic sects, such as feet washing, river baptisms, and impromptu chanted sermons. But they are also less Calvinistic and more evangelical than groups such as Primitive Baptist s and Old Regular Baptist s, and promote Sunday Schools and revivals. Most of the churches do not use musical instruments though some do , and singing is strictly congregational. The old practice of lining hymns is reserved for use preceding communion and feet washing. Three associations Original Mountain Union, Primitive and Union have about 3300 members in 36 churches. The geographical distribution of these churches is in 8 counties in Maryland , North Carolina , Pennsylvania , and Virginia . There are no known surviving distinct groups of Union Baptists in other border states. External links ..., North Carolina, and New River, Virginia, Baptist Associations , by J. F. 1. Baptists in Canada

Baptist Baptists in Canada have a rich heritage and background. United Empire Loyalists and those of British ancestry have formed the core and foundation of the Baptist denomination in Canada. Statistics and changes According to the Canada 2001 Census , the number of people in Canada who identify themselves as Baptist is 729,470, about 2.5 of the population, an increase of about 10 in the 10 years since the 1991 census see Religion in Canada . A growing practice of existing and new churches in Canada and the United States is the dropping of the term Baptist from their church s name. Often, this practice is due to concern over what is perceived within the church to be a negative stereotype by the general population toward the label Baptist , but not toward the church or Baptist beliefs in general. This negative stereotype has often been perceived legalism, associated with the word baptist . Churches who make this change are interested in attracting people who are unchurched, and who may have barriers with becoming affiliated with a denomination, or specifically becoming a baptist . 1. Black Primitive Baptists

Baptist Black Primitive Baptists fall into two categories traditionalist black Primitive Baptists that follow the historical basic theology and practice of Primitive Baptists in general, and those who fellowship through the National Primitive Baptist Convention of the U.S.A. . The old school black Primitive Baptists meet with some degree of complication in fellowshipping with their white counterparts, because of a division that took place among white Primitive Baptists Absolute Predestinarian versus Limited Predestinarian that did not occur among the black Primitive Baptists. Views ranging from absolute predestination to limited predestination exist among the black churches, with no break of fellowship. The National Primitive Baptist Convention, USA was organized in Huntsville, Alabama in 1907 and represents a progressive movement among black Primitive Baptists. These churches have adopted many modern practices not common among Primitive Baptists, such as instrumental music and Sunday Schools.
