The museums history dates from 1779 when the objects of natural history, in L Acad mie de Lausanne were indexed by Daniel Alexandre Chavannes . In 1826, Chavannes vertebrate collection was purchased by Vaud L Etat de Vaud . The museum opened in the Acad mie de Lausanne in 1833. In 1886, the museum acquired 1,300 specimens bird specimens from Albert Vouga 1829 1896 , the author of Album Neuch telois. Vues historiques et pittoresques a book of landscape and natural history photography. Important collections of later date include the ant collection of Auguste Forel and the Entomology insect collection of the then Director Jacques Aubert 1916 1995 . His reputation is based upon the handbook of comparative anatomy, the 9th ed. of which, by Lang, was issued under the title Lehrbuch der vergleichenden Anatomie der wirbellosen Tiere 1888 1894 . He also wrote a Lehrbuch der Zoologie 1853 , and for advanced classes Leitfaden der Zoologie 4th ed. 1882 . From 1860 he devoted himself more especially to the investigation of Porifera Spongiae , and published on this subject several treatises.
