A bargainingunit in labor relations is a group of employees with a clear and identifiable community of interests who are under U.S. law represented by a single labor union in collective bargaining and other dealings with management. Examples would be non management professors law enforcement professionals blue collar workers clerical and administrative employees etc. Geographic location as well as the number of facilities included in bargaining units can be at issue during representation cases. The size of a company does not relate to the size of a bargainingunit. Bargaining units must consist of at least 3 employees, and must have the support of a majority of employees in the bargainingunit. However, the bargainingunit could be a small portion of a large company, where no other employees are members of a union. for other types of power Power disambiguation Bargaining power is a concept related to the relative abilities of parties in a situation to exert influence over each other. If both parties are on an equal footing in a debate, then they will have equal bargaining power, such as in a perfectly competitive market , or between an evenly matched monopoly and monopsony . There are a number of fields where the concept of bargaining power has proven crucial to coherent analysis game theory , labour economics , collective bargaining arrangements, deterrence theory diplomatic negotiations , settlement conference settlement of litigation , the price of insurance , and any negotiation in general. Pattern bargaining is a process in labour relations, where a trade union gains a new and superior entitlement from one employer and then uses that agreement as a precedent to demand the same entitlement or a superior one from other employers. In the United States, pattern bargaining was pioneered by unions such as the United Auto Workers and the Teamsters . The first step of the bargaining process is the identification of a target employer that is most likely to agree to a favorable employment contract. For the selected company, this provides an opportunity to influence the contract for the industry, while the downside is the risk of a labor disruption if negotiations stall or fail. Once this contract has been successfully negotiated and ratified by the unionized workers, the union declares it a pattern agreement and presents it to the other employers as a take it or leave it offer. In Australia , pattern bargaining was specifically outlawed under the now repealed WorkChoices legislation. The law was repealed by the Labor party after their victory in the Australian federal election, 2007 2007 election , but Labor s Fair Work Act, which came into force on 1 July 2010, still outlaws pattern bargaining. Fact bargaining is a type of plea bargaining that occurs when prosecutors and defendants bargain over what version of events should be stipulated to by the parties and presented to the court as what happened. Some statutes or sentencing guidelines specify that certain increases or decreases in the sentencing range must occur if certain facts are proven. E.g., a drug offense may carry a mandatory minimum sentence if the offender had a prior drug felony, possessed a certain amount of drugs, or played a supervisory role in a drug conspiracy. The prosecutor may agree to stipulate that there was no such prior drug felony, that the offense less than the threshold amount of drugs, or that the offender played no such supervisory role, in exchange for a guilty plea . Fact bargaining can also involve the defendant stipulating to certain facts in exchange for certain concessions, so that the prosecutor does not need to prove those facts. Nancy King has argued that fact bargaining defeats the intention of the sentencing guidelines to have judges find facts. ref http www.law.duke.edu magazine 2005spring newsbriefs time.html ref Judges rarely overturn stipulations reached by fact bargaining. ref cite court litigants United States v. Requirements A standard Rubinstein bargaining model has the following elements Two players Complete information Unlimited offers the game keeps going until one player accepts an offer Alternating offers the first player makes an offer, then the second player makes a counteroffer if he rejects, then the first player makes another counteroffer if he rejects, and so forth Delays are costly Solution Although there are many different methods to solving the game, one of the simpler ones involves extending the ultimatum game to increasingly many counteroffers. The subgame perfect equilibrium offer for any number of periods begins to form a geometric series . Thus, we can extend the solution to infinitely many periods by solving for a geometric series. Image FP9Au RLGN 1400.jpg thumb 300px An EMD FP9 A owned by Mackenzie Northern Railway . An A unit , in railroad terminology, is a locomotive generally a diesel locomotive diesel or electric locomotive equipped with a driving cab locomotive cab , or crew compartment, and the Multiple unit train control control system to control other locomotives in a multiple unit , and therefore able to be the lead unit in a consist of several locomotives controlled from a single position. This terminology is generally used in North America , since only there was it commonplace to build B unit s&mdash cabless locomotive units which normally could not lead a train. Typical features Typical driving cab features, and therefore A unit features, include windshields, rectangular side windows, crew seats, heating, and sometimes, radios, air conditioning and toilets. B units always lack all of these features, except that some EMD F unit s have an extra porthole style side window s for a hostler an employee permitted to move a locomotive in a yard only &mdash not on the road . Terminology This terminology has fallen out of use for newer locomotives, since it only really applied to the cab unit style of locomotive. Thus, the term cab unit is used only when an A unit has a Cab unit carbody design. Hood unit road switcher types were generally equipped with driving cabs and the term A unit was not generally applied to them, although the rare cabless road switchers were still called B units. Conversions In some cases, A units were converted to B units. If the unit had been involved in a collision which damaged the cab, it was sometimes more cost effective to rebuild the unit without the cab. In rarer cases, B units were converted to A units. DISPLAYTITLE S unit In mathematics , in the field of algebraic number theory , an S nowiki nowiki unit generalises the idea of Unit ring theory unit of the ring of integers of the field. Many of the results which hold for units are also valid for S units. Definition Let K be a number field with ring of integers R . Let S be a finite set of prime ideals of R . An element x of K is an S unit if the principal fractional ideal x is a product of primes in S to positive or negative powers . For the ring of rational integers Z one may take S to be a finite set of prime numbers and define an S unit to be a rational number whose numerator and denominator are divisible only by the primes in S . Properties The S units form a multiplicative group containing the units of R . Dirichlet s unit theorem holds for S units the group of S units is finitely generated, with Rank of an abelian group rank maximal number of multiplicatively independent elements equal to r s , where r is the rank of the unit group and s S . S unit equation The S nowiki nowiki unit equation is a Diophantine equation u v 1 with u , v restricted to being S units of K . The number of solutions of this equation is finite and the solutions are effectively determined using estimates for linear forms in logarithms as developed in transcendence theory . A variety of Diophantine equations are reducible in principle to some form of the S unit equation a notable example is Siegel s theorem on integral points on elliptic curve s, and more generally so called hyperelliptic curves of the form y sup n sup f x .
