File Barren Basic map.gif thumb Map of the Barren Isles archipelago The Barren Isles Nosy Barren in Malagasy constitutes an archipelago formed with 9 main isles sand banks , located between 15 and 40  km off the west coast of Madagascar , in Melaky region. Approximatively 10 or 15 years ago, it was forbidden according to local customs fady to live on these isles, only sheltering or resting for a few days maximum was allowed, for local fishers. But Vezo fishers migrating from the south west of Madagascar, as far as from south of Toliara , in increasing numbers, now live on the isles most of the year since 2004 2006. Many of them stay between March and December, that is to say up to 10 months of the year, living in makeshift houses made of palms, tarpaulins and pieces of wood.
