  1. Archon basileus

Archon Basileus Greek language Greek was a Ancient Greece Greek title, meaning king magistrate the term is derived from the words archon magistrate and basileus monarch king or Monarch sovereign . Most modern scholars claim without any real evidence that in classical Athens , the Archon Basileus was the last remnant of monarchy. Although much of his powers, they say, had been filtered away to other institutions such as the Areopagus and later the Boule ancient Greece Boule and Ecclesia ancient Athens Ecclesia , he still nominally held a high position in Athenian society, alongside the Eponymous Archon and Polemarch. The Archon Basileus was charged with overseeing the organisation of religious rites. There is a tradition that originally the Archon Basileus was elected from the Athenian aristocracy every ten years. After 683 BC , the office was only held for a year, and after Solon s reforms, he was elected from the wealthiest Athenians, the Pentakosiomedimnoi , 500 bushel men , rather than the Eupatridae , the aristocractic families . After 487 BC , the Archonships were assigned by lot. It is believed the Basileus Archon s wife, the Basilinna , had to marry and have intercourse with the god Dionysos during a festival at the Boukoleion in Athens, to ensure the city s safety. ref Stanton, p. 7. ref It is uncertain how this was enacted. However, this was an important role for a woman who, according to Plutarch and Solon, would otherwise be confined to the house and be of little importance. During antiquity, women in Greece served as priestesses and presented oracle s such as those issued at Delphic Oracle Delphi . References reflist Sources Stanton, G.R. 1. Basil of Amasea

Basil of Amasea Basileus or Basilius was a fourth century Christian bishop and martyr. In St. Jerome s Latin version of the Chronicle of Eusebius the statement occurs under the 275th Olympiad 321 324 that Basileus, Bishop of Amasea in Pontus , suffered martyrdom in the reign of Licinius ref ed. Schone Berlin, 1875 , 191. ref . Among the signatures of the bishops who attended the Council of Ancyra and Council of Neo Caesarea 314 is to be found the name of Basileus of Amasea ref Giovanni Domenico Mansi Mansi , Coll. conc., II, 534, 548. ref . Eusebius also relates ref Church History Eusebius Church History , X, viii. ref that in the time of Licinius Christians were treated with great cruelty, especially in Amasea and the other cities of Pontus, and that, in particular, the governor inflicted upon several bishops the ordinary punishments of evildoers. Athanasius mentions Basileus of Pontus among the bishops of the early part of the fourth century who held firmly to the like substance of the Son with the Father the reference is evidently to the martyr bishop of Amasea ref Athan. Opera, ed. Mannius , I, 122. ref . The statement of Philostorgius ref ed. Henri Valois Valesius Eusebius, Church History Turin, 1748 , III, 433. ref , that Basileus attended the First Council of Nicaea Council of Nicaea , cannot be quoted against this proof of the martyrdom of Basileus under Licinius, as there is evidently a mistake in what Philostorgius says among the signatures at the Council of Nicaea appears that of Eutychianus Disambiguation needed date June 2011 as Bishop of Amasea. The Acts of the martyrdom of Basileus, supposedly written by an eyewitness, a presbyter named Johannes, are not authentic and the narrative is entirely legendary. The feast of Basileus falls on 26 April , on which date it occurs both in the Greek synaxaria and menaion and in the Roman martyrology . 1. Basilinna

For the genus of sapphire hummingbird s, see Basilinna bird . Basilinna lang grc was the title of the wife of the basileus Archon Basileus of ancient Athens . During the festival of Anthesteria , the basilinna was given as the ceremonial bride to Dionysus . She was attended to by the gerarai fourteen gerarai at this time. This is explained by what happened in the myth of Theseus and Ariadne , where Theseus soon to be king of Athens had eloped with the Cretan princess, Ariadne. But, no sooner had this occurred, that Dionysus claimed her as his own. Or, as it is claimed, Ariadne was already betrothed to Dionysus. References Otto, Walter F. Dionysus, Myth and Cult. Fourteen in all, they were either sworn in by the Basilinna Athenian Basilinna or the Basileus Archon Basileus either the queen or king .
