  1. King Mortone

basses had been made. In 1946 production resumed and continued steadily until 1965 when the string department of H. N. White was sold to Kay Musical Instrument Company Kay Double Basses . By this point approximately 5000 basses had been made. When Kay had control of King Mortone Basses they stopped production and used the factories to make Kay Double Basses. King Mortone basses are often considered the some of the finest double basses for jazz ever to have been made especially for the slap bass style. Disambiguation The original H. N. White manufactured King basses are in no way related to the latter day King Doublebass basses of Huntington Beach, CA KDB . The construction, sizing and finishes all differ significantly, with Mortone basses being on the large size nearer 7 8 than 3 4 with bulbous shoulders, and KDB basses being slim shouldered. KDB have never made any claims about any connection to the basses produced for the H. N. White Company. Furthermore, as Kay owned the rights to the King Mortone name, it would now be the property of Engelhardt Link who produce basses to the Kay patterns using the same model designations as Kay under the name Engelhardt. 1. Tobias (bass guitar company)

Tobias is a brand of bass guitar originally made by luthier Michael Tobias starting in the 1970s and later bought out by Gibson Guitar Corporation . The basses are of neck through construction, a style of neck body assembly where the neck of the instrument is a single piece of wood that extends through the body and had the sides of the bass glued to it rather than being bolted on. Tobias basses also were among the first to feature an asymmetrical neck, a design where the neck is thinner on the lower side than the upper. ref cite web url http www.gibson.com products tobias aboutus.html title Tobias Basses The Classics publisher Gibson.com date 2008 06 24 accessdate 2012 02 03 ref Tobias Guitars was established in Orlando, Florida in April 1977. 1. Wishbass

unreferenced date October 2006 Wishbass is a custom bass guitar company located in Winston Salem, North Carolina . The company owner and head luthier, Steve Wishnevsky, specializes in making unorthodox bass guitars out of both exotic and domestic woods. Overview Wishbass are hand crafted electric basses made from fine domestic and exotic woods. They are generally inexpensive due to their simple electronics and design. Wishnevsky is also often ridiculed due to his radical and sometimes unaesthetic body shapes, and for his trademark open headstock , which he claims adds sustain. Wishnevsky focuses attention on using minimal metal in the construction of his basses to improve tone. However he has received criticism for this claim, as the notion of metal having a negative impact on the tone of any instrument is absurd. For example, virtually every instrument in the classical orchestra includes metal or is made entirely from metal. He often features many different wood laminates on the bodies of his bass guitars, as do many of his contemporary hobbyists. The woods he usually uses are domestic, such as walnut and maple , but he does frequently use exotic woods such as cocobolo and bubinga . The nuts and bridges on his basses are made of Corian , a plastic material commonly used as an inexpensive alternative to the better nut and bridge material, bone. Wishnevsky builds mainly fretless bass es with no trussrods for cheaper construction costs. It is notable that although he is emphatic in using minimal amounts of metal in his basses, most of them feature an aluminum control cavity cover plate, contradictory to his own false claims regarding the acoustics of metal. Wishbasses are mainly built with passive electronics, and tone knobs are usually not present on Wishnevsky s basses. The lack of a Low pass filter Passive electronic realization tone control limits the player s ability to manipulate the tonal qualities of the bass guitar by electrical means, which is another point ...   more details

  1. Shergold Marathon

The Shergold Marathon was a range of guitars and basses produced by the Shergold Woodcrafts Ltd. company. These models were produced in 4,6 and 8 string models. The Marathon bass The Marathon bass had three main scale lengths. For the standard 4 string bass, the scale length measures at 34 inches, whilst the 6 string model measured at 30 inches with a neck width some 5mm wider than that of the 4 string model. The 8 string model used the same scale length and neck width as the 4 string model ref http www.shergold.co.uk originfo.html Leaflet3 ref . The bass came in 5 colors, including a sunburst color, black, cherry red, white and a natural finish. Left handed models were also produced at an additional cost ref http www.shergold.co.uk originfo.html Leaflet3 ref . This bass came in a number of different formats over the years of production, mostly including different electronics configurations ref http www.shergold.co.uk models.html Marathon ref . Mark I basses, were the earliest form of the Marathon. These typically feature stereo wiring and circuitry, with a humbucker pick up and for earlier models a toggle switch, allowing for use in both stereo and mono configurations. This model is highly identifiable, as the bass only featured a single stereo output, which needed the use of a splitter cable. Some bassists later modified the internal electronics to bypass this and allowed them to run the bass on a single mono output ref http www.shergold.co.uk models.html Marathon ref . 1. Luthite

Luthite is a light weight synthetic material developed by Westheimer Corporation http patft.uspto.gov netacgi nph Parser?Sect1 PTO1&Sect2 HITOFF&d PALL&p 1&u 2Fnetahtml 2FPTO 2Fsrchnum.htm&r 1&f G&l 50&s1 5905219.PN.&OS PN 5905219&RS PN 5905219 a US based Cort Guitars importer for the construction of bass guitar and guitar bodies. Luthite was developed as a substitute for wood, for as a synthetic composite material there is much greater control over the consistency of production. Additionally it is able to be formed to almost any shape, i.e. 3D shapes out of plane, where the wood equivalent would require a very large body blank or laminate s. In spite of these advantages, it possesses considerably less resistance to impact than its wooden counterparts. This renders finished instruments more susceptible to being chipped during use or cracking if dropped. The Timbre tone of luthite is different from many tonewood s, this may be seen as an advantage or disadvantage according to personal preference. This is probably much less of an issue in basses, since most typical guitar materials wood, luthite, etc. don t resonate at those low frequencies anyway. Whilst primarily used in Cort s Curbow series basses, the Ibanez Ergodyne series basses and guitars were also made of luthite until 2006.
