Image NAMA Black figure amphora by the Piraeus Painter.jpg thumb Early Attic black figure amphora by the Piraeus Painter, found in Athens or Piraeus , Athens National Archaeological Museum of Athens National Archaeological Museum . The Piraeus Painter was one of the first Attica Attic black figure vase painting black figure vase painters. He was active between 630 and 600 BC. The Piraeus Painter was a contemporary of the Nessos Painter , whose importance and artistic class he did not reach. His name vase , a neck amphora in Athens , National Archaeological Museum of Athens National Archaeological Museum 353, was found at Piraeus . The most noteworthy feature of that vase is the snout of the depicted lion, stylised into the shape of a volute . Images of lions were quite popular at the time, as in the works of the Lion Painter and the Gorgon Painter . Except his animal figures, which display a safe intuition for design and proportions, his other figures appear very stiff and awkward. Bibliography John Beazley Attic Black figure Vase painters . Archaeological Museum of PiraeusPiraeus Apollo is the name of an archaic style bronze dating from the 6th century BC,possibly from the years 530 520 BC,exhibited now at the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus Athens .Apollo was the god of the ideal order and balance and the depictions of naked young men in the Kouros young male type are believed to be representations of the god. This bronze statue seems to be the last stage in the development of the formal almost static Kouros type that survived for a long time from the Archaic period in Greece early Archaic period 640 580 BC . Museum, Athens The Piraeus Apollo Photo by Giovanni Dall Orto, Nov 14 2009.jpg thumb left 140px Side back view of Piraeus Apollo Originally the Kouros type represented the archaic thought that nature expresses itself in ideal everlasting simple forms which can be traced by the senses and depicted in a way of illusive reality.Matter was not regarded lifeless but something full of life,in an almost animistic belief. These ideas seem to go parallel with the natural philosophical conceptions of Thales from Miletus who searched a simple material form behind the appearances of the things and also believed that matter was alive .This material character is paralleled in sculpture by the absolute representation of blooming life through unnaturally simplified forms. ref E.Homman,Wedeking.Transl.J.R.Foster 1968 . It was originally located in Piraeus , the ancient harbour of Athens . Early development of railway transport in Greece involved a number of different companies, which had created their own workshops for maintenance and constructions. The most important were Railway Works in Piraeus , originally operated by Athens Piraeus Railways SAP, which later transformed into Hellenic Electric Railways, EIS , and Piraeus, Athens and Peloponnese Railways SPAP, forerunner of Hellenic Railways Organisation OSE , which, in addition to maintenance, repair and rebuilding, have entirely constructed a significant number of railroad cars, mostly between 1880 and 1960. Other noteworthy constructions included a small number of electric tram s clearly copies of a Dick Kerr Type Tram Dick Kerr model built by EIS in 1939, and one of Greece s first Diesel locomotives, designed and built by SPAP in 1961. The crown jewel of the Piraeus Works was the royal wagon, built in 1888 as a present to King George I of Greece . The luxurious vehicle was so admired, that an entire engineering project was organized in order to transport and present it in the 1888 Olympia Fair held in Zappeion . It survives to date, exhibited in the Railway Museum of Athens . References I. Zartaloudis, D. Karatolos, D. Koutelidis, G. Nathenas, S. Fasoulas, A.
