The Treaty of Ramla was signed by Saladin and Richard the Lionheart in June 1192 after the Battle of Arsuf . Under the terms of the agreement, Jerusalem would remain under Muslim control. However, the city would be open to Christian pilgrimages. Also, the treaty reduced the Latin Kingdom to a geopolitical coastal strip that extended from Tyre, Lebanon Tyre to Jaffa . Neither Saladin nor King Richard were fond of the overall accord but had little other choice. The Muslim ruler had been weakened by the trials and expense of war and King Richard had to deal with threats to his kingdom at home. Image Ramla Bay.jpg thumb Ramla Bay This article is about Ramla Bay in Gozo. There is another Ramla Bay near Marfa, Mellieha Island of Malta . Ramla Bay is located at the bottom of a rich and fertile valley on the northern side of the island of Gozo . Gozo is one of the Maltese islands. The village of Xag ra , located on one of the hills of Gozo, overlooks this valley. It is about a forty minute walk from Xag ra to the bay. The bay can also be reached from the village of Nadur . Bus service to the beach is extremely intermittent. The terraced walls built by the farmers give the valley an appearance of a quilt when viewed from the high ridges surrounding it. The beach is quite wide and sandy. It is a particularly golden reddish sand which makes this beach different from all others in Gozo and Malta . Its real Maltese name is Ir Ramla il amra the Red Sandy Beach. The area around the beach is quite interesting and provides some very rich historical treasures. Roman remains lie beneath the sand and the famous Calypso Cave overlooks the western side of the beach. The beach is popular with both Maltese residents and tourists, and part of it is a Natura 2000 site. There are two cantinas on the beach and several ice cream kiosks. The beach is surrounded by hillsides on both the west and east where many local farmers have gardens and orchards. A sandy path on the eastern hillside leads up to the Calypso Cave . According to tradition, this is the cave referred to by Homer in The Odyssey . The nymph Calypso mythology Calypso lived in this cave and it is where she entertained Odysseus Ulysses for seven years before he resumed his journey. Calypso Cave is in fact a series of caves and, according to some Who date June 2010 , these extend right down to the sea. In recent years, these caves ... Baldwin I died 1138 was the castellan and lord of Ramla in the Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1106 to his death. In 1120 he participated in the Council of Nablus . In 1134, Jaffa was confiscated to the king after the rebellion of Hugh II of Jaffa Hugh II and Ramla became was given to Baldwin, to hold from the count of Jaffa. Baldwin has been identified with Baldwin of Hestrut, a knight who appears in the Crusader states Latin East for the first time between 1102 and 1105. The sudden disappearance of Baldwin after this date could be attributed to his receiving the castellany of Ramla and adopting it as his surname.
