He was Chief of the Imperial General Staff from 1912 to 1914, Commander of the British Expeditionary Force World War I British Expeditionary Force in the First World War from 1914 to 1915 and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1919 to 1922. French had already been created Viscount French , of Ypres and of High Lake in the County of Roscommon, in 1916. This title was also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He was succeeded by his son, the second Earl. He was a Captain in the Royal Artillery as well as a talented artist. On his death the titles passed to his son, the third Earl. He fought in the Second World War as a Captain in the King s Royal Rifle Corps . Lord Ypres had four daughters but no sons and on his death in 1988 his titles became extinct. His youngest daughter, Lady Lucy French , became a prominent journalist and has done extensive work for charity and fundraising for the arts most notably for Open Air Theatre, Regent s Park Regent s Park Open Air Theatre . The suffragette and writer Charlotte Despard was the elder sister of the first Earl. Saint George s Memorial Church , Ypres , Belgium , was built to commemorate over 500,000 British and Commonwealth troops, who had died in the three battles fought for the Ypres Salient , during World War I . The church was built following an appeal led by The Ypres League and its President Field Marshal Sir John French Sir John French, Earl of Ypres , for a British memorial church to be built. Land was given by the town, and the foundation stone was laid by Field Marshal Lord Plumer on July 24, 1927. The church was consecrated by the Bishop of Fulham on March 24, 1929. The architect was Reginald Blomfield Sir Reginald Blomfield . John Richard Lowndes French, 2nd Earl of Ypres 6 July 1881 5 April 1958 was the son of the British field marshal and the first commander of the British Expeditionary Force World War I British Expeditionary Force BEF in World War I Sir John French, 1st Earl of Ypres John French . He was born near Morpeth, Northumberland Morpeth in Northumberland where his father was stationed. He followed his father by joining the army and he served with the Royal Field Artillery but his military career was cut short following a riding accident. French was also a talented artist, something which did not endear him to his father. He succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Ypres following his death on the 22 May 1925. During the Second World War he commanded a battalion of the Home Guard United Kingdom Home Guard .
