It is about 25  km long, beginning near the village of Struy , at the confluence of the River Farrar and the River Glass, Strathglass River Glass gbmapping NH408399 . The river meanders as it flows east, passing to the south of the village of Beauly and into the Beauly Firth . The river was first bridged in 1814, when Thomas Telford constructed the Lovat Bridge about 1  km south west of Beauly. This bridge carried the A9 road Great Britain A9 , the main route north, until the Kessock Bridge was opened in 1982. A railway bridge across the river on the outskirts of Beauly was built in the 1860s to carry the Inverness & Ross shire Railway now the Far North Line . Another road bridge, near Kilmorack, was built in the 20th century. It was probably founded in 1230. It is not known for certain who the founder was, different sources giving Alexander II of Scotland , John Byset , and both. The French monks, along with Bisset a nearby, recently settled landowner , had a strong enough French speaking presence to give the location and the river the name beau lieu beautiful place and have it pass into English. It is not the best documented abbey, and few of the prior of Beauly priors of Beauly are known by name until the 14th century. It became Cistercian on April 16, 1510, after the suppression of the Valliscaulian Order by the Pope. The priory was gradually secularized, and ruled by a series of commendators. The priory s lands were given over to the bishop of Ross by royal charter on October 20, 1634. The ruins today are still extensive and are one of the main visitor attractions in Inverness shire. It lies between the Isle of Mull to the northwest and the Isles of Kerrera , Seil and Luing the Slate Islands along with parts of the Scottish mainland southwest of Oban on the southeast side. The firth s width ranges from 5 to 10  km. It is about 25  km long. Geography The long narrow basin forming the firth is part of the Great Glen Fault , which runs through its namesake, the Great Glen , and Loch Linnhe before joining with the Firth of Lorn, whence it runs further southwest across Ireland . The firth s northeast end forms a junction with several other arms of the sea, namely Loch Linnhe , the Lynn of Lorne , Loch Etive , and the Sound of Mull . Loch Spelve and Loch Don on the Isle of Mull and Loch Feochan on the mainland are inlets of the Firth of Lorn. On the southeast side, there are also several Channel geography channel s and Sound geography sounds in the Slate Islands. Climate Tide Tidal conditions in and around the Firth of Lorn cause a number of phenomena, such as the Falls of Lora at the outlet of Loch Etive, and whirlpool s and standing wave s in the Gulf of Corryvreckan between Scarba and Jura, Scotland Jura .
