Unreferenced date December 2009 science The term behavioural sciences encompasses all the disciplines that explore the activities of and interactions among organism s in the natural earth world . It involves the systematic analysis and investigation of human and animal behaviour through controlled and naturalistic observation, and disciplined scientific experimentation. It attempts to accomplish legitimate, objective conclusions through rigorous formulations and observation E.D. Klemke, R. Hollinger & A.D. Kline, eds. 1980 . Examples of behavioural sciences include psychology , cognitive science , and anthropology . Difference between behavioural sciences and social sciences The term behavioural sciences is often confused with the term social sciences . Though these two broad areas are interrelated and study systematic processes of behaviour, they differ on their level of scientific analysis of various dimensions of behaviour. Behavioural sciences abstract empirical data to investigate the decision processes and communication strategies within and between organisms in a social system. This involves fields like psychology and social neuroscience , among others. In contrast, social sciences provide a perceptive framework to study the processes of a social system through impacts of social organisation on structural adjustment of the individual and of groups. They typically include fields like sociology , economics , history , counselling , public health , anthropology , and political science E.D. Klemke, R. Hollinger & A.D. Bacterial genetics is the subfield of genetics devoted to the study of bacteria. Bacterial genetics are subtly different from eukaryotic genetics, however bacteria still serve as a good model for animal genetic studies. One of the major distinctions between bacterial and eukaryotic genetics stems from the bacteria s lack of membrane bound organelles this is true of all prokaryotes. While it is a fact that there are prokaryotic organelles, they are never bound by a lipid membrane, but by a shell of proteins , necessitating protein synthesis occur in the cytoplasm . animal testing The behavioural despair test also called the Porsolt test or forced swimming test is a test used to measure the effect of antidepressant drugs on the behaviour of laboratory animals typically rats or mice . Method Animals are subjected to two trials during which they are forced to swim in an acrylic glass cylinder filled with water, and from which they cannot escape. The first trial lasts 15 minutes. Then, after 24 hours, a second trial is performed that lasts 5 minutes. The time that the test animal spends without moving in the second trial is measured. This immobility time is decreased by antidepressants. Controversy in interpretation Classically, the results of this test have been interpreted such that immobility in the second test is a behavioural correlate of negative mood, representing a kind of hopelessness in the animal. However, there is some debate between scientists whether increased immobility instead demonstrates a learning within the animal and a positive behavioural adaptation, i.e. the animal has learnt it can t escape and is conserving energy until it is removed by the experimenter. As for any behavioral paradigm, it is extremely important to display the appropriate control groups when presenting results obtained using the forced swimming test. The terms of behavioural despair test bears an anthropomorphic connotation. Strictly speaking, the descriptive terms forced swimming test should be used preferentially. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Classical genetics consists of the technique and methodologies of genetics that predate the advent of molecular biology . A key discovery of classical genetics in eukaryote s was genetic linkage . The observation that some gene s do not segregate independently at meiosis broke the laws of Mendelian inheritance , and provided science with a way to map characteristics to a location on the chromosome s. Linkage maps are still used today, especially in breeding for plant improvement . After the discovery of the genetic code and such tools of Clone genetics cloning as restriction enzyme s, the avenues of investigation open to geneticists were greatly broadened. Some classical genetic ideas have been supplanted with the mechanistic understanding brought by molecular discoveries, but many remain intact and in use. Classical genetics is often contrasted with reverse genetics , and aspects of molecular biology are sometimes referred to as molecular genetics .
