Hortic. Soc. 26 1 32 ref German language German Versuche ber Pflanzen Hybriden was the result after years spent studying genetics genetic traits in pea plants. Mendel read his paper to the Natural History Society of Br nn Brno on February 8 and March 8, 1865. It was published in the Proceedings of the Natural History Society of Br nn the following year. In his paper, Mendel compared seven discrete characters Image Mendel seven characters.svg right The seven characteristics observed by Mendel Color and smoothness of the seeds grey and round or white and wrinkled Color of the cotyledons yellow or green Color of the flowers white or violet Shape of the pods full or constricted Color of unripe pods yellow or green Position of flowers and pods on the stems Height of the plants short or tall Through experimentation, Mendel discovered that one inheritable trait would invariably be dominant to its recessive alternative. This model, later known as Mendelian inheritance or Mendelian genetics, provided an alternative to blending inheritance, which was the prevailing theory at the time. The experiments were part of the United States research into the full effects of the atomic bomb , including post detonation Nuclear fallout radioactive fallout . The first tests were conducted under the name Operation Crossroads . Preparation During World War II , Bikini Atoll was home to a small Japanese radar installation . In 1945, the last year of fighting, the U.S. landed a small force to secure the site. The battle was brief and had no strategic significance. As the war ended, the United States decided that Bikini Atoll would be suitable for nuclear detonation tests, and shortly before Christmas 1945 it was selected to be the site of the world s fourth and fifth atomic bomb detonations. Note that the first atomic bomb was detonated at the Trinity test Trinity Site in New Mexico , and the second and third bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Nagasaki Nagasaki during World War II. During World War II some test flights of V 1 flying bomb Fi 103 V1 rockets were flown from the military camp of Altenwalde. In 1945, Kurt Debus was ordered to install a launch pad for testing A4 rockets in the area of Cuxhaven, as a replacement for Stand VII in Peenem nde however, the project could not be completed due to the military situation towards the end of the war. Nevertheless, in October 1945, these works supplied a basis for Operation Backfire WWII Operation Backfire , a demonstration of three A4 rocket launches to military representatives of the Allied Occupation Forces. One launch pad and two concrete shelters were built for Operation Backfire , near the road between Arensch and Sahlenburg , where some remnants still exist today. 1950s In 1952 in Hespenbusch , Karl Poggensee began to develop and launch small solid propellant rockets. In the same year a Rocket Technical Society was created, initially known as DAFRA, then as the German Rocket Society Deutsche Raketengesellschaft or DRG, and finally as the Hermann Oberth Society Hermann Oberth Gesellschaft or HOG . These are also known as the Asch Paradigm . Influences on Asch Solomon Asch attributed his research on group conformity to an experience he had as a child growing up in Poland. When Asch stayed up late to participate in his first Passover, he witnessed his grandmother setting out an extra glass of wine out on the table. When Asch asked who would be drinking that glass of wine, his uncle replied that it was for the prophet Elijah. Balloon Experiments with Amateur Radio or BEAR is a series of Canada Canadian based Amateur Radio High Altitude Ballooning amateur radio high altitude balloon experiments by a group of Amateur Radio operators and experimenters from Sherwood Park and Edmonton, Alberta. The balloon s are made of latex filled with either helium or hydrogen . All of the BEAR payloads carry a tracking system comprising a GPS receiver, an Automatic Packet Reporting System APRS encoder, and a radio transmitter module. Other experimental payload modules include an Amateur Radio crossband repeater, and a digital camera all of which is contained within an insulated foam box suspended below the balloon. A parachute recovery system is automatically deployed when the balloon bursts at altitude.
