The Brown Dots were initially formed in late 1944, when second tenor Ivory Deek Watson b. 18 July 1909, Mounds, Illinois d. 4 November 1969, Washington, DC left the Ink Spots . He immediately put together a competing Ink Spots group consisting of lead tenor Joe King, bass Jimmy Gordon, and an unknown baritone. By late January 1945, a lawsuit brought by the Ink Spots caused Deek Watson to claim that he would form a new group based on a completely new idea . This new idea was simply to change their name to the Brown Dots and to sound as much like the Ink Spots as possible although the Brown Dots employed more extensive harmonies . At this time, the unknown baritone left, to be replaced by baritone guitarist William Pat Best. Overview By March 1945, they were recording for Newark New Jersey based Manor records. At their first session, they recorded four songs, including Sentimental Reasons written by Pat Best and led by Joe King . This song would become more popular through the years as For Sentimental Reasons or I Love You For Sentimental Reasons . There were hit versions of the song in 1946 for Nat King Cole and Charlie Spivak . 1947 saw charters by Eddy Howard, Dinah Shore , Ella Fitzgerald , and Art Kassel. Over the years, it s also been done by among others Smiley Lewis 1954 , the Rivileers 1954 , Sam Cooke 1958 , Jesse Belvin 1959 , the Voices Five 1959 , Donnie Elbert 1960 , the Cleftones 1961 , the Spaniels 1961 , Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells 1964 , Rufus Thomas 1971 , James ... clashes with Bill Kenny and Joe King had left the Brown Dots when he and Watson started fighting. Chroma dots are visual artefacts caused by displaying an unfiltered analogue colour video signal on a black and white television or monitor. They are commonly found on black and white recordings of television programmes originally made in colour. Chroma dots were once regarded as undesirable picture noise, but recent advances in computer technology have allowed them to be used to reconstruct the original colour signal from black and white recordings, providing a means to film colourization colourise material where the original colour copy is lost. Background Analogue colour video signals comprise two components chrominance and luma luminance . The luminance component describes the brightness of each part of the picture, whilst the chrominance component describes the colour tone. When displayed on a black and white monitor the luminance signal produces a normal black and white image, whilst the chrominance signal manifests as a fine pattern of dots of varying size and intensity overlaid over the black and white picture. A related phenomenon is dot crawl , which can produce visual artefacts in colour pictures. History In the early days of colour television, it was common practice for broadcasters to produce black and white film copies of colour programmes for sale and transmission in territories lacking colour broadcast facilities or employing different colour television systems. During the telerecording telerecording process , it was normal practice to insert a filter circuit between the colour video output and the black and white monitor input in order to remove the colour signal and prevent the formation of chroma dots. In many cases, however, the filter was not used and the chroma dot patterning is permanently burned into the resulting film recording. No footnotes date April 2009 Image La Cara de Barcelona 001.jpg thumb right Roy Lichtenstein The Ben Day dots printing process, named after illustrator and printer Benjamin Henry Day, Jr. , is similar to Pointillism . Depending on the effect, color and optical illusion needed, small colored dots are closely spaced, widely spaced or overlapping. Magenta dots, for example, are widely spaced to create pink. 1950s and 1960s pulp comic book s used Ben Day dots in the four process colors CMYK color model cyan, magenta, yellow and black to inexpensively create shading and secondary color s such as green, purple, orange and flesh tones. File Benday Dots.svg left thumb Ben Day dots differ from halftone dots in that the Ben Day dots are always of equal size and distribution in a specific area. To apply the dots to a drawing the artist would purchase transparent overlay sheets from a stationery supplier. The sheets were available in a wide variety of dot size and distribution, which gave the artist a range of tones to use in the work. The overlay material was cut in the shapes of the tonal areas desired i.e. shadow or background or surface treatment and rubbed onto the specific areas of the drawing with a burnisher. When photograph ically reproduced as a line cut for letterpress printing , the areas of Ben Day overlay provided tonal shading to the printing plate. Ben Day dots were considered the hallmark of United States American artist Roy Lichtenstein , who enlarged and exaggerated them in many of his painting s and sculpture s. Other illustrator s and graphic design ers have used enlarged Ben Day dots in print media for a similar effect.
