Notwithstanding his arduous duties as a solicitor , he devoted a large portion of his time both to scientific pursuits and to benevolent and social enterprise s. He exerted himself with great energy to extend the advantages of the General Hospital , in behalf of which he was one of the chief promoters of the Birmingham musical festival s. He was the founder of the Birmingham Philosophical Society , and by his lectures on chemistry gave a considerable impetus to certain special manufactures. From the first he took a special interest in the inventions of Watt and Boulton and it was chiefly owing to his exertions that an act was obtained for that gigantic absurdity, as it was called, the Birmingham railway . In recognition of his scientific acquirements he was in 1839 elected a member of the Royal Society . He died 6 December 1845. His statue in marble is in the General Hospital. He became apprenticed to an apothecary at Hay on Wye , and qualified as a surgeon in London in 1780. He then joined the Royal Navy serving for two years, mainly in Canada. After leaving the navy, he joined the Honourable East India Company East India Company and spent much of his career in India , carrying on business as well as working as a surgeon. While in India, he set up some small libraries in order to further the education of soldiers serving there. He bought an estate on the island of Saint Vincent island St Vincent , and, when he returned to London in 1817, he spent the rest of his days in acts of charity, kindness and hospitality . Phillips was a major benefactor of St David s College, Lampeter , and this led to his founding Llandovery College in 1847, after the college authorities had refused his offer to endow a Welsh professorship at Lampeter. Llandovery College was founded under the name of the Welsh Educational Institution, with a donation of 4,666 and a library of 7,000 books given by Phillips. It is not certain whether he spoke the Welsh language himself, but he had a major concern for its survival, and specified that it be taught regularly and systematically at the college, and also for some portion of the day to be the sole medium of communication and instruction. The foundation stone was laid on December 13, 1849. Life and work Peter Watson was the son of William George Watson, later Watson Baronets Sir George Watson and was the youngest of three children his brother Norman was born in 1897 and sister Florence in 1894. Thomas Henshaw 1731 1810 was an English hatter from Oldham , Lancashire . He bequeathed the funds for the foundation of The Blue Coat School, Oldham Blue Coat School in Oldham and Henshaws Society for Blind People . Early life Henshaw was born in 1731 at Prestbury, Cheshire , one of seven children. His parents, John and Martha Henshaw, owned and farmed a small estate in Butts Lane, Prestbury . Henshaw s father died when he was two years old. Henshaw was the youngest surviving child in his family. At an early age Henshaw was put to work with his brother Henry on a farm in Derbyshire. He subsequently left his brother in possession of the farm, and around 1755 he became an apprentice to John Fletcher, a hat manufacturer in Oldham. After serving his apprenticeship, Thomas left Oldham for Manchester, where he became part owner of a dye works. Around 1770 Henshaw returned to Oldham and entered into a partnership with his old master, John Fletcher. His brother, Henry Henshaw, joined the partnership a couple of years later. In time Thomas and Henry Henshaw set up their own business in the hatting trade and established a manufacturing works on what is now Henshaw Street in Oldham. Businessman and public benefactor The Henshaws were remarkable for their habits of industry and frugality and as a result of their almost unceasing attention to business their hat works became the largest in the district, with about 300 workers.
