    Expand Spanish Batalla del cabo Machichaco date July 2011 Campaignbox Spanish Civil War The Battle of Cape Machichaco was a naval battle which took place on 5 March, 1937 off Bermeo , during the Spanish Civil War , between the Spanish Nationalist Spain Nationalist heavy cruiser Spanish cruiser Canarias Canarias and four Second Spanish Republic Republican Basque people Basque naval trawler armed trawlers escorting a convoy. The trawler Guipuzcoa ran aground and the Nabarra was sunk by the main guns of the rebel cruiser. Matxitxao s sea fight war started the 5 of march of 1937, in front of the matxitxako s cape, in Bizcaia. It was on the time of the civil war in Spain, it was between the Basque army of the sea who was defending the republic and the vessel cross who were defending Franco. The fifth of march of that year, the Galdames market ship was going to Bilbao with 173 passengers. In front of matxitxako they met with the Canarias ships. To protect the Galdames the Basque trawlers which were around there and the Nabarra ship was sunk and another two were damaged. The history The fourth of march all the trawlers of Bizcaia, Gipuzkoa, Donostia and Nabarra exit of Bayona. Their intention was to protect all the ship s letters, the passengers, the machinery and Basque government s 500 tonnes of nickel coins. The Cannarias ships exit from Ferrol with Salvador Moreno as the captain, With the desire of stopping the Galdama ship because it was transporting supplies and weapons for the republic.
