The term sandbagger refers to the use of sandbags to shift the boat s center of gravity in order to obtain the most power from the sails. Modeled after the catboat Honest , which was built in 1892 by Jelle Dykstra on the west bank of Greens Creek, West Sayville, Modesty was built as a gaff rigged sloop, but retained the extreme beam of a catboat . For auxiliary power, a two cylinder Gafka gasoline engine was installed. Modesty was described by oystermen as a true southsider . She is believed to be the last sailing scallop dredger built on Long Island . A beautiful vessel, a fine sailer and typical of the old oyster sloops, her lines show graceful proportions in hull and rig. She has a wide beam and sits low in the water. Her shallow draft permitted her to operated commercially in the oyster and scallop flats of Long Island s bays and the river estuaries of Connecticut . The fact that she was even built at the end of the age of sail is due to a law enacted before World War I, which stipulated that only sail power could be used while dredging for scallops. The Charlotte was built in Sydney and registered at 16 tons on 19 December 1803. Owned and skippered by Robert Inch and assisted by his hand, George Conway, the ship was five miles North of Port Jackson , heading for the Hawkesbury River with a cargo of grain when it was hit by a squall and sunk after its mainsail jibed. This was observed by the sloop Hope which was travelling a mile south of the Charlotte at the time of the sinking. During trading with the Ahousaht subgroup of the Tla o qui aht division of the Nuu chah nulth people Nuu chah nulth in Clayoquot Sound late in 1864 the vessel was attacked and its captain, a Captain Stephenson, and three crew members were massacred. HMS Devastation 1841 HMS Devastation , a small gunboat, was dispatched to the scene but due to overwhelming superiority of Ahousaht forces waited for reinforcements, which came in the form of the screw frigate HMS Sutlej 1855 HMS Sutlej and its fifty guns. Holding offshore from Marktosis , one of the main Ahousaht communities, Joseph Denman Admiral Denman , commander of the vessel, demanded the surrender of Chapchah , who had masterminded the killings. When the residents refused, Denman opened fire on the village, destroying it. Subsequently the village of Moyat and others were destroyed by shellfire and incendiary rockets from the Sutlej . The Windsor left the Hawkesbury Which? date March 2012 and headed for Sydney when it was blown well off shore by a gale. It is probable that it was this gale that ended up sinking the Recovery ship Recovery the same month. Eventually the Windsor reached Newcastle, New South Wales Newcastle where it picked up the survivors of the Recovery wreck.
