He completed preparatory studies and graduated from Union University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1854. He was an adjunct professor of mathematics and languages at that institution. He graduated from Cumberland School of Law at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee in 1857 and was admitted to the bar association bar in Ripley, Mississippi the same year. He moved to Smith County, Tennessee in 1858 and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private in 1861 and served throughout the war. In the last year, he was on the staffs of Brigadier General s Ambrose R. Wright Wright and Mackall. He moved to Lebanon, Tennessee in Wilson County, Tennessee Wilson County in 1865 to practice law, but he was employed as a deputy clerk in the chancery clerk s office for five years. Yancey, the brother of a leading Fire Eaters Fire Eater William Lowndes Yancey , was born in Charleston, South Carolina . He attended Franklin College now known as the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences , the founding school of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia Athens , was a member of the Phi Kappa Literary Society and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Arts A.B. degree in 1836. He also attended Harvard Law School . Yancy married Sarah Paris Hamilton. In 1849, he was elected to the South Carolina General Assembly and served one term. He also practiced law in Hamburg, South Carolina at that time. He moved to Cherokee County, Alabama , and was elected to the Alabama Senate in 1855, serving as the president of that body. He was Minister to Argentina in 1858. During the Civil War, he was a major in Cobb s Legion . He was president of the Alabama State Agricultural society in 1867, and he served as a trustee of the University of Georgia from 1860 to 1889. In 1875, Yancy was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives as a representative of Clarke County, Georgia Clarke County . He died in 1891.     Lead too long date March 2009 John Yancey Schmitt , was an inmate executed by lethal injection at the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, Virginia on November 9, 2006. Schmitt was found guilty of the 1999 murder of Earl Shelton Dunning, 39. Schmitt, who was 25 years old when he committed the capital crime , was sentenced to death on February 18, 2000. Murder Shortly after 1 00 p.m. on February 17, 1999, Schmitt entered the NationsBank in Bon Air, Virginia wearing dark sunglasses and a bulky jacket. Schmitt kept his head lowered and appeared to scan the interior of the bank. Branch banking Bank manager Sara Parker Orr testified that she was nervous about Schmitt because he was wearing sunglasses inside the bank on a really cloudy day. After Schmitt went inside the bank, Earl Dunning, the bank s new security guard , entered the bank and walked across the lobby to stand at the end of the teller line in which customers were waiting. Parker Orr watched Schmitt leave the line he was currently in and walk toward Dunning. When Schmitt was within a foot or so of Dunning, Parker Orr heard two gunshot s and then heard someone scream, Get down, get down. Schmitt next approached Parker Orr s teller window and banged on the counter yelling, Money , give me money, and If I don t get money, I m going to kill everybody. Parker Orr opened her cash drawer and threw money into a black plastic bag that Schmitt was holding. Schmitt continued to bang on the counter demanding more money. He said that he would give the tellers ten seconds to give him more money, and began counting backward from the number ten. By the time Schmitt reached nine, teller Marlene Austin was throwing money in the bag as well. Parker Orr also gave Schmitt money from a third teller s drawer. When she told Schmitt that she had no more money to give him, he left the bank. None of the witnesses who testified at trial actually saw who shot Dunning and the shooting was not recorded by the bank s security camera system ...   more details
