The Paraphrases were Latin Biblical paraphrase s, rewritings of the Gospel s by Desiderius Erasmus . They were composed between 1517 and 1524 and occasionally revised by Erasmus during the remaining years of his life. The publication history of the Paraphrases is complicated. Erasmus began with the Pauline Epistles . The paraphrase of Epistle to the Romans Romans was published in quarto by Dirk Martens in Leuven Louvain in November 1517 and reprinted by Erasmus s friend Johann Froben in January of the following year it sold well and was soon reprinted in octavo . Epistle to the Corinthians Corinthians was published by Martens in February 1519 and reprinted in Basel by Froben in March Epistle to the Galatians Galatians appeared later that year, with editions from both publishers. The remaining Epistles followed in 1520 and 1521, the last to appear being Epistle to the Hebrews Hebrews . In the autumn of 1521 Erasmus moved from Louvain to Basel, and from that time Froben published the first editions of the remaining Paraphrases . Erasmus now turned to the Gospels, Gospel of Matthew Matthew appearing in March 1522 in both folio and octavo from now on there are no more quartos , Gospel of John John in February folio and March octavo 1523, Gospel of Luke Luke in August 1523, and Gospel of Mark Mark in early 1524 with a title page dated 1523 . Erasmus Alberus c. 1500&ndash 1553 , Humanism in Germany German humanist , reform movement reformer , and poet , was born in the village of Bruchenbr cken now part of Friedberg, Hesse about the year 1500. Although his father was a schoolmaster, his early education was neglected. Ultimately in 1518 he found his way to the University of Wittenberg , where he studied theology. He had the good fortune to attract the attention of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon , and subsequently became one of Luther s most active helpers in the Protestant Reformation . Not only did he fight for the Protestant cause as a preacher and theologian, but he was almost the only member of Luther s party who was able to confront the Roman Catholics with the weapon of literary satire . In 1542 he published a prose satire to which Luther wrote the preface, Der Barfusser Monche Eulenspiegel und Alkoran, a parodic adaptation of the Liber conformitatum of the Franciscan Bartolommeo Rinonico of Pisa, in which the Franciscan order is held up to ridicule. Of higher literary value is the didactic and satirical Buch von der Tugend und Weisheit 1550 , a collection of forty nine fables in which Alberus embodies his views on the relations of Church and State. His satire is incisive, but in a scholarly and humanistic way it does not appeal to popular passions with the fierce directness which enabled the master of Catholic satire, Thomas Murner , to inflict such telling blows. Erasmus Stourton 1603 Narborough, Leicestershire Narborough , Leicestershire , England November 1658, Walesby, Lincolnshire , England was a clergyman and early settler to the Province of Avalon Colony of Avalon , Colony of Newfoundland Newfoundland in 1627. He is known as one of the earliest Anglican clergyman to come to Newfoundland. Erasmus Lewes 1663 or 1664 &ndash 1745 was a Welsh Church of England Anglican clergyman, copies of some of whose sermons are held by the National Library of Wales . Life Lewes was the youngest son of John Lewes, a clergyman from Llangunllo , Wales, and was born in 1663 or 1664 since when he matriculation matriculated at Jesus College, Oxford in February 1684, he was said to be 20 years old . Lewes graduated from the University of Oxford in 1688 and was thereafter ordained, beycoming vicar of Roch in Pembrokeshire in 1692 and vicar of Brawdy in the same county in 1694. In the following year, he was made rector of Betws Bledrws and vicar of Lampeter , Cardiganshire . He died on 19 February 1745 and was commemorated with a memorial stone in the church at Lampeter. He was known as the Father of the Deaf and Dumb Institute of Mississippi . Early life and career Erasmus Burt was born around 1820 in Edgefield County, South Carolina . He was one of ten children of Francis Burt , a member of South Carolina House of Representatives from 1798 to 1800, and Catherine Miles. His brothers included Armistead Burt November 16, 1802 October 30, 1883 , who was elected to United States Congress Congress in 1843 for South Carolina and served until 1853 and who was married to the niece of John C.
