  1. M (videocassette format)

M was the name of a professional analog recording videocassette format developed around 1982 by Panasonic Corporation Matsushita and RCA . It was developed as a competitor to Sony s Betacam format. In the same way Betacam was designed to take advantage of cheap and readily available Betamax videocassettes, M used the same videocassette and the same oxide formulated magnetic tape loaded in the cassette as VHS . M Format also used a similar component video format to that used by Betacam, as opposed to VHS s composite video format , and recorded at a much faster linear tape speed, as Betacam did. A cassette that would yield 120 minutes on a VHS VCR at SP speed would only yield 20 minutes on a M VCR. The format was called M due to the shape of the threading path of the tape around the helical scan video head drum, which resembles a letter M. This is also how the U matic format got its name, for its U shaped tape path in the VCR. VHS also uses the same M shaped tape threading path as M it was carried over to M from VHS. M had a similar 4 head recording system to Betacam, but the chrominance signals were recorded as two FM subcarriers of the main chrominance track Frequency Modulation FM carrier . M had little success in the professional industrial video production market. This might have been due to RCA s Broadcast Products division, which marketed the M format in the United States under the Hawkeye brand name, going out of business in 1984 shortly after M was introduced . Thus NBC was one of the few Broadcasters to use the format. Weak marketing by Matsushita for M might have been a factor as well. M was also marketed by Panasonic a division of Matsushita and Ampex under the Recam REcording CAMera name. M was succeeded in 1986 by the MII videocassette format MII format developed by Panasonic , using a similar sized cassette with completely different signal processing and a metal particle tape formulation. 1. Digital cassettes

unreferenced date February 2007 Digital Sound audio cassette formats introduced to the professional audio and consumer markets Digital Audio Tape or DAT is the most well known, and had some success as an audio storage format among professionals and prosumers before the prices of hard drive and solid state flash memory based digital recording devices dropped in the late 1990s. Hard drive recording has mostly obsoleted DAT, as hard disk recorder s offer more editing versatility than tape, and easier importation into digital audio workstation s DAWs and non linear video editing NLE systems. Digital Compact Cassette was intended as a digital replacement for the mass market Compact audio cassette analog cassette tape , but received very little attention or adaptation. Its failure is generally attributed to higher production costs than Compact disc audio CDs , and lukewarm reception by consumers. Digital videocassette s include Betacam IMX Sony D VHS JVC D1 Sony D1 Sony D2 video format D2 Sony D3 video D3 D5 HD Digital S D9 JVC Digital Betacam Sony Digital8 Sony DV HDV ProHD JVC MiniDV Analog cassettes used as digital data storage Historically, the Compact audio cassette which was originally designed for analog signal analog storage of music was used as an alternative to disk drive s in the late 1970s and early 1980s to provide Compact Cassette Data recording data storage for home computer s. The ADAT system uses Super VHS tapes to record 8 synchronized digital audiotracks at once. There have also been several audio recording systems which used VHS VCR video recorders as storage devices and video tape transports, generally by encoding the digital data to be recorded into an analog composite video signal which resembles static and then recording this to magnetic tape . These systems were generally used as mixdown recorders, to record the finished mix from a Multitrack recording multi track recorder in preparation for the manufacture of a vinyl record, cassette tape, or CD. ...   more details

Editcam is a professional digital camera system manufactured by Ikegami Tsushinki Ikegami and first introduced in 1995, available both as professional camcorders and modular dock recorders. Its most distinguishinge feature is the recording medium The FieldPak , which is a cartridge that contains an IDE hard disk with up to 120 GB of storage, or its compatible companion, the RAMPak , a flash memory module with up to 16 GB. A 120 GB capacity FieldPak translates to some 9 hours of DV25 video. Both, unlike tape based formats, allow random access to the video data, and both standalone Video cassette recorder VCR replacement players and computer adaptor racks are available for the Paks. This made the Editcam a pioneer in the field of non linear acquisition, but the earliest incarnations of the Editcam were plagued with high power consumption and weight, and sold only about 50 units sup http www.urbanfox.tv articles cameras c2editcam.html sup . These problems were addressed with the Editcam II in 1999. The latest generation of the Editcam system, Editcam3, can record in the formats Avid JFIF , DV and optionally Betacam MPEG IMX MPEG IMX and DV DVCPRO DVCPRO50 . High definition television HDTV variants are now also available, which record in the Avid DNxHD format. Introduced at NAB 2005, the Editcam HD allows for video capture at 145 Mbit s. Employing CMOS sensors, the camera record files natively in 1080i or 720P and at several bitrates. 1. Serial Data Transport Interface

Serial Data Transport Interface is a way of transmitting data packets over a Serial Digital Interface datastream. This means that standard SDI infrastructure can be used. Developed to address the needs of the growing number of compressed video standards DV , DVCPRO , Betacam BetaSX , MPEG2 it allows lossless transfer of data to other devices which have the same codec, for example DV to DV or SX to SX. Using a standard Serial Digital Interface SDI transport, the extra data is placed within normal active video, between Start of Active Video SAV , and End of Active Video EAV . This gives 1440 10bit words of data at 270Mb s 1920 words in the 8bit 360Mb s standard . If an SDTI stream is viewed using a standard SDI device, then the raw data can be seen as a small strip along the left hand side usually in purple . The DVCAM SDTI has video data at the top, control data in the middle Timecode , etc and audio at the bottom just like it is organised on the tape. Because SDTI is used for compressed data the area used is less than a full screen this allows for faster than realtime transfers. SDTI is standardized as SMPTE 305M . A 1.5 GBit s version, using the HDTV high definition serial digital interface, is standardized as SMTPE 348M .
