This may be brought on directly, as in the case of nasal body piercing piercing s, or indirectly, as by long term topical drug use like cocaine or decongestant nasal spray s, chronic nosebleed epistaxis , aggressive digital nasal cleaning nose picking and as a complication of nasal surgery like septoplasty or rhinoplasty . Much less common causes for perforated nasal septums include rare granulomatous inflammatory conditions like Wegener s granulomatosis . It has been reported as a side effect of anti angiogenesis drugs like bevacizumab . Symptoms A perforated septum can vary in size and location, and is usually found deep inside the nose. It may be asymptomatic, or cause a variety of symptoms. Small perforations can cause a whistling noise when breathing. Larger perforations usually have more severe symptoms. These can be a combination of crusting, blood discharge, difficulty breathing, nasal pressure and discomfort. The closer the perforation is to the nostrils, the more likely it is to cause symptoms. Treatment The majority of septal perforations can be managed without surgery. The hole will never close but if the open, raw trailing edge of the perforation can heal, the vast majority of symptoms resolve. The open irritated and raw surface must be continuously covered with a cream using a cotton applicator. This will prevent this area from drying out, cracking, bleeding, forming a scab and crusting up. A few months of successful application will allow the ulcerated edge to heal and reduces or resolves symptoms. In a small percentage of patients surgery is necessary to alleviate symptoms. There are several different ... more details

The ischemic retina releases a variety of factors, the most important of which is VEGF. These factors stimulate the formation of new blood vessels angiogenesis . Unfortunately, these new vessels do not have the same characteristics as the blood vessels originally formed in the eye. In addition, new blood vessels can form in areas that do not have them. Specifically, new blood vessels can be observed on the iris. In addition to the blood vessels in the iris, they can grow into the angle of the eye. These blood vessels then block fluid leaving the eye and result in an increase in intraocular pressure. This is called neovascular glaucoma . Treatment If caught early, the neovascularization can be reversed with prompt pan retinal photocoagulation PRP , or injection of anti VEGF medications with subsequent PRP. The injection blocks the direct effect of VEGF and acts more quickly but will wear off in about 6 weeks. ref Davidorf FH, Mouser JG, Derick RJ. Rapid improvement of rubeosis iridis from a single bevacizumab Avastin injection. Retina. 2006 Mar 26 3 354 6. PMID 16508439. ref PRP has a slower onset of action but can last permanently. Once the neovascularization has been longstanding, the new vessels recruit fibrous tissue, and as this forms and contracts, the angle can be permanently damaged, and will not respond to treatment. If this occurs, then surgical intervention is required to reduce the pressure such as a glaucoma drainage implant C ... more details

Preferential hyperacuity perimetry is a psychophysical test used to identify and quantify visual abnormalities such as metamorphopsia and scotoma. Background Vision abnormalities such as metamorphopsia distortions and scotoma are symptoms of retinal diseases such as Macular degeneration . In advanced stages of the disease, photoreceptor cell s may be irreversibly damaged. Hence,if not treated Macular degeneration may lead to blindness. Awareness to early changes in vision, especially in high risk patients, leads to early treatment such as intravitreal injection of anti VEGF factors, e.g. bevacizumab or ranibizumab and prevents loss of vision. ref cite journal author Loewenstein A. title The significance of early detection of age related macular degeneration Richard & Hinda Rosenthal Foundation lecture. journal Retina. date September 2007 volume 27 issue 7 pages 873 878 pmid 17891011 ref Because of complex brain mechanisms such as Filling in , patients with small and peripheral defects in their vision are often unaware of such changes until late stages in the disease. ref cite journal author Achard OD, Safran AB, Duret FC, Ragama E. title Role of the completion phenomenon in the evaluation of Amsler grid results journal Am J Ophthalmol. date September 1995 volume 20 issue 3 pages 322 329 pmid 7661204 ref Another problem is that minute visual aberrations can be normal and therefore should be distinguished from genuine visual abnormalities. about side effects in the context of medicine side effects in the context of computer science Side effect computer science other uses In medicine , a side effect is an effect, whether therapeutic or adverse, that is secondary to the one intended although the term is predominantly employed to describe adverse effect s, it can also apply to beneficial, but unintended, consequences of the use of a drug . Occasionally, drugs are prescribed or procedures performed specifically for their side effects in that case, said side effect ceases to be a side effect, and is now an intended effect. For instance, X ray s were historically and are currently used as an imaging technique the discovery of their oncolytic capability led to their employ in radiotherapy ablation of malignancy malignant tumour s . Use of drugs for unapproved indications that is, for their side effects is termed off label use . For instance, opioids, which are approved as palliative care palliative treatment for pain , may also be used for their euphoriant properties as anxiolytics or antidepressants , whether medically or recreational drug use recreationally . Off label use of drugs, although similar in meaning to side effects, is not to be confused with them side effects describe the mechanism of action that a drug used off label takes, whereas off label use implies the desired consequences of using a drug for its side effects. Off label use of drugs is legal the manner in which prescription medication is to be used is solely at the discretion of the physician prescriber . However, the marketing of drugs towards unapproved indications is illegal in fact, several pharmaceutical development firms have been fined for unapproved promotion of their products. Examples of therapeutic side effects Bevacizumab Avastin has been used against wet age related macular degeneration , as well as macular edema from diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and central retinal vein occlusion . ref cite news url http www.guardia ... more details
