  1. Biological thermodynamics

Biological thermodynamics is a phrase that is sometimes used to refer to bioenergetics , the study of energy transformation in the biological science s. Biological thermodynamics may be defined as the quantitative study of the energy transductions that occur in and between living organisms, structures, and cells and of the nature and function of the chemical processes underlying these transductions. Biological thermodynamics may address the question of whether the benefit associated with any particular phenotype phenotypic trait is worth the energy investment it requires. History German British medical doctor and biochemist Hans Adolf Krebs Hans Krebs 1957 book Energy Transformations in Living Matter written with Hans Kornberg ref cite journal author Robert Alberty Alberty R title A short history of the thermodynamics of enzyme catalyzed reactions journal J Biol Chem volume 279 issue 27 pages 27831 6 year 2004 pmid 15073189 url http www.jbc.org cgi content full 279 27 27831 doi 10.1074 jbc.X400003200 ref was the first major publication on the thermodynamics of biochemical reactions. One way of categorizing metabolic processes, whether at the cell biology cell ular, organ or organism level is as anabolic or as catabolism catabolic , which is the opposite. Anabolism is powered by catabolism, where large molecules are broken down into smaller parts and then used up in cellular respiration respiration . Many anabolic processes are powered by adenosine triphosphate ATP . ref Nicholls D.G. and Ferguson S.J. 2002 Bioenergetics Academic press 3rd edition ISBN 0 12 518121 3 ref Anabolic processes tend toward building up Organ biology organ s and Tissue biology tissue s. These processes produce growth and differentiation of cells and increase in body size, a process that involves chemical synthesis synthesis of complex molecule s. Examples of anabolic processes include the growth and mineralization of bone and increases in muscle mass. Endocrinologist s have traditionally classified hormone s as anabolic or catabolic, depending on which part of metabolism they stimulate. The classic anabolic hormones are the anabolic steroid s, which stimulate protein synthesis and muscle growth. The balance between anabolism and catabolism is also regulated by circadian rhythm s, with processes such as glucose metabolism fluctuating to match an animal s normal periods of activity throughout the day. ref cite journal author Ramsey KM, Marcheva B, Kohsaka A, Bass J title The clockwork of metabolism journal Annu. 1. Protonophore

A protonophore , also known as a proton translocator, is an ionophore that allows proton s to cross lipid bilayer s. This would otherwise not occur as protons have positive charge and hydrophilic properties, making them unable to cross without a Ion channel channel or Membrane transport protein transporter . Protonophores are generally aromatic compounds that are both hydrophobic and capable of distributing the negative charge over a number of atoms by Atomic orbital orbital s which delocalize a proton s charge in the molecule. ref http biom.3322.org 2966 ebook1 biophy Fundamental 20Principles 20of 20Membrane 20Biophysics.pdf accessed 19th Nov 2008 ref ref cite journal author Nicholls, David G., and Ferguson, Stuart J. title Bioenergetics 3 journal Academic Press, London. year 2002 ISBN 0 12 518121 3 ref Both the neutral and the charged species can diffuse across the lipid bilayer by passive diffusion and simultaneously facilitating proton transport. ref cite journal author Chopineaux Courtois V, Reymond F, Bouchard G,Carrupt PA, Testa B, Girault HH. title Effects of Charge and Intramolecular Structure on the Lipophilicity of Nitrophenols journal J.
