  1. Yingying's Biography

The Biography of Ying ying Ying ying zhuan , by Yuan Zhen , is Tang dynasty story that tells the history of a sexual relationship between a 16 year old girl and a 21 year old man. The girl hurts herself and also hurts the man. The man hurts himself and also hurts the girl. Some Chinese critics blame the young man for taking the girl s virginity when it is offered to him but not marrying her. The story has been translated into English by James Hightower Y an Chen and The Story of YIng ying HJAS 33 1973 90 123 , Arthur Waley available in the Anthology of Chinese Literature by Cyril Birch, vol. I. ISBN 0 8021 5038 1 , and http www.china learn.info Ying ying 20Zhuan.html here . The translations of Waley and Hightower agree, for the most part, on the events described. Their choices of words may bias readers in favor of one character or the other. The young man, known only as the student Zhang pronounced jong as in Erica Jong , was living in a rented dwelling in a Buddhist compound in the countryside some distance from a small city when a recently widowed woman, her daughter and son, and an entourage befitting their wealth moved into another rented dwelling in that compound. The father of the family had died while stationed in some remote part of China, so the widow Cui pronounced tswei was returning the family to Chang an. They paused in their journey to recuperate from their long trek. Troops in the nearby city mutinied, so the student Zhang used his friendly connections with influential men in that city to get a guard posted over the compound. The widow Cui and her group were made much more secure as a result of the student Zhang s pulling of strings. She gave a banquet to express her gratitude for Zhang s actions. The widow Cui bade her daughter to attend the banquet and to say thank you to the student Zhang. However, the daughter only appeared because she was under duress, and behaved in a most petulant and churlish manner. Nevertheless, she appeared gloriously beautiful ...   more details

  1. Dictionary of Australian Biography

The Dictionary of Australian Biography , published in 1949, is a reference work by Percival Serle containing information on notable people associated with Australia n history. With approximately a thousand entries, the book took more than twenty years to complete. It should not be confused with the multi volume Australian Dictionary of Biography published by Melbourne University Press in 1966. The book contains 1030 biographies of Australians, or men who were closely connected with Australia, who died before the end of 1942. According to Serle in his preface blockquote This date closed the first one hundred and fifty years of Australia s history, for although the first fleet arrived in January 1788, the first emigrant ship, the Bellona, did not come until January 1793. 1. Dictionary of Virginia Biography

The Dictionary of Virginia Biography ISBN 0 88490 206 4 is a multivolume biographical reference work published by the Library of Virginia covering all aspects of Virginia Virginia s history and culture since 1607. Publication began in 1998 with a volume covering surnames from Aaroe through Blanchfield. Volume 2 2001 covered Bland through Cannon, and volume 3 2006 covered Caperton through Daniels. When completed, the projected fourteen volumes will contain approximately 6,000 biographies of Virginians who, regardless of their place of birth or death, made significant contributions to the history or culture of their locality, state, and nation or who achieved particular distinction in their professions or chosen fields. No persons living at the time of publication are included. Because for two and a half centuries of its history Virginia Territorial evolution of the United States encompassed a much larger territory than it does today, the DVB defines Virginia as the current state boundaries plus Kentucky before its separate statehood in 1792 and West Virginia before its separate statehood in 1863.
