Bit banging is a technique for serial communications using software instead of dedicated hardware. Software directly sets and sampling signal processing samples the state of pins on the microcontroller , and is responsible for all parameters of the signal timing, levels, synchronization, etc. In contrast to bit banging, dedicated hardware such as a modem , UART , or shift register handles these parameters and provides a buffered data interface in other systems, so software is not required to perform signal demodulation. Bit banging can be implemented at very low cost, and is used in, for example, embedded systems . ref cite book title Programming and customizing PICmicro microcontrollers edition ... of a hack, bit banging does allow the same device to use different protocols with minimal or no hardware changes required. At their most fundamental level, digital computers and telecommunications devices as opposed to analog signal analog devices can process only data that has been expressed in binary code binary format. The binary format expresses data as an arbitrary length series of values with one of two choices Yes No, 1 0, True False, etc., all of which can be expressed electronically as On Off. For information technology applications, the amount of information being processed is an important design consideration. The term bit length is technical shorthand for this measure. For example, computer processors are often designed to process data group into data type word s of a given length of bits 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit, 64 bit, etc. . The bit length of each word data type word defines, for one thing, how many memory locations can be independently addressed by the processor. distinguish The Time Dirty Bit The computer hardware concept of a Dirty Bit Modify Bit can be used when discussing the CPU cache or Page replacement algorithm s of an operating system . Page Replacement When speaking about page replacement, each Page computer memory page frame may have a modify bit associated with it in the hardware. The dirty bit for a page is set by the hardware whenever any word or byte in the page is written into, indicating that the page has been modified. When we select a page for replacement, we examine its modify bit. If the bit is set, we know that the page has been modified since it was read in from the Hard disk drive disk . In this case, we must write that page to the disk . If the dirty bit is not set, however, the page has not been modified since it was read into Random access memory memory . Therefore, if the copy of the page on the disk has not been overwitten by some other page, for example , then we can avoid writing the memory page to the disk it is already there. ref Abraham Silberschatz, Peter Baer Galvin, Greg Gagne. When a file is created or modified, the archive bit is set, and when the file has been backed up, the archive bit is cleared. It is by use of the archive bit that incremental backups are implemented. Backup software also provides the option to do a full backup while clearing archive bits that is, to back up all files irrespective of the archive bit, but to clear the archive bit of all files in the backup for the future.
