  1. Black hole (networking)

Unreferenced date August 2011 In computer networking networking , black holes refer to places in the network where incoming internet traffic traffic is silently discarded or dropped , without informing the source that the data did not reach its intended recipient. When examining the network topology topology of the network , the black holes themselves are invisible, and can only be detected by monitoring the lost traffic hence the name. Dead addresses The most common form of black hole is simply an IP address that specifies a host machine that is not running or an address to which no host has been assigned. Even though Internet protocol suite TCP IP provides means of communicating the delivery failure back to the sender via Internet Control Message Protocol ICMP , traffic destined for such addresses is often just dropped. Note that a dead address will be undetectable only to protocols that are both connectionless and unreliable e.g., UDP . Connection oriented or reliable protocols TCP, Reliable User Datagram Protocol RUDP will either fail to connect to a dead address or will fail to receive expected acknowledgements. 1. Extremal black hole

Refimprove date December 2009 In theoretical physics , an extremal black hole is a black hole with the minimal possible mass that can be compatible with a given electric charge charge and angular momentum . ref name High Energy Physics Theory Supersymmetry as a Cosmic Censor Authors Renata Kallosh, Andrei Linde, Tom s Ort n, Amanda Peet, Antoine Van Proeyen http arxiv.org abs hep th 9205027 ref In other words, this is the smallest possible black hole that can exist while rotating at a given fixed constant speed. The concept of an extremal black hole is theoretical and none have thus far been observed in nature. However, many theories are based on their existence. In supersymmetric theories, extremal black holes are often supersymmetric they are invariant under several supercharge s. This is a consequence of the BPS bound . Such black holes are stable and emit no Hawking radiation . Their black hole entropy ref name Jacob D. Bekenstein Black Holes and Entropy Author Jacob D. Bekenstein http prd.aps.org abstract PRD v7 i8 p2333 1 ref can be calculated in string theory . It has been suggested by Sean Carroll that the entropy of an extremal black hole is equal to zero. Carroll explains the lack of entropy by creating a separate dimension for the black hole to exist within. This theory is not held in high regard, however. 1. Optical black hole

Refimprove date March 2009 An optical black hole is a phenomenon in which slow light is passed through a Bose Einstein condensate that is itself spinning faster than the local speed of light within to create a vortex capable of trapping the light behind an event horizon just as a gravitational black hole would. Unlike other black hole analogs such as a sonic black hole in a Bose Einstein condensate, a slow light black hole analog is not expected to mimic the quantum mechanics quantum effects of a black hole, and thus not emit Hawking radiation. It does, however, mimic the classical mechanics classical properties of a gravitational black hole, making it potentially useful in studying other properties of black holes. ref W.G. Unruh and R. The calculations of the properties of near extremal black holes are usually performed using perturbation theory quantum mechanics perturbation theory around the extremal black hole the expansion parameter is called non extremality . In supersymmetric theories, near extremal black holes are often small perturbations of supersymmetric black holes. 1. Virtual black hole

In quantum gravity , a virtual black hole is a black hole that exists temporarily as a result of a quantum fluctuation of spacetime . ref S. W. Hawking 1995 http arxiv.org abs hep th 9510029v1 Virtual Black Holes ref It is an example of quantum foam and is the gravitation al analog of the virtual electron positron pairs found in quantum electrodynamics . Theoretical arguments suggest that virtual black holes should have mass on the order of the Planck mass , lifetime around the Planck time , and occur with a number density of approximately one per Planck volume . ref name a Fred C. Adams, Gordon L. Kane, Manasse Mbonye, and Malcolm J. Perry 2001 , http adsabs.harvard.edu abs 2001IJMPA..16.2399A Proton Decay, Black Holes, and Large Extra Dimensions , Intern. J. Mod. Phys. A , 16 , 2399. ref If virtual black holes exist, they provide a mechanism for proton decay . This is because when a black hole s mass increases via mass falling into the hole, and then decreases when Hawking radiation is emitted from the hole, the elementary particles emitted are, in general, not the same as those that fell in. Therefore, if two of a proton s constituent quarks fall into a virtual black hole, it is possible for an antiquark and a lepton to emerge, thus violating conservation of baryon number . ref name a The existence of virtual black holes aggravates the black hole information loss paradox , as any physical process may potentially be disrupted by interaction with a virtual black hole. ref http arxiv.org abs hep th 9508151v1 The black hole information paradox , Steven B. 1. Charged black hole

A charged black hole is a black hole that possesses electric charge . Since the electromagnetic repulsion in compressing an electrically charged mass is dramatically greater than the gravitational attraction by about 40 orders of magnitude , it is not expected that black holes with a significant electric charge will be formed in nature. A charged black hole is one of three possible types of black holes that could exist in the theory of gravitation called general relativity . Black holes can be characterized by three no hair theorem and only three quantities, its mass M called a Schwarzschild black hole if it has no angular momentum and no electric charge , angular momentum J called a Kerr black hole if it has no charge , and electric charge Q charged black hole or Reissner Nordstr m black hole if the angular momentum is zero or a Kerr Newman black hole if it has both angular momentum and electric charge . A special, mathematically oriented article describes the Reissner Nordstr m metric for a charged, non rotating black hole. The solutions of Einstein s field equation for the gravitational field of an electrically charged point mass with zero angular momentum in empty space was obtained in 1918 by Hans Reissner and Gunnar Nordstr m , not long after Karl Schwarzschild found the Schwarzschild metric as a solution for a point mass without electric charge and angular momentum. 1. Black hole bomb

A black hole bomb is the name given to a physical effect utilizing how a bosonic field impinging on a rotating black hole can be amplified through superradiant scattering . An additional condition which must be met is that the field must have a rest mass different than zero. The scattered wave will then be reflected back and forth between the mass term and the black hole becoming amplified on each reflection. The growth of the field is asserted to be exponential and unstable. The mechanism by which the black hole bomb functions is called superradiant instability .
