The Blacks A Clown Show lang fr Les N gres is a play by the France French dramatist Jean Genet . Published in 1958, it was first performed in a production directed by Roger Blin at the Th atre de Lut ce in Paris , which opened on 28 October 1959. In a prefatory note, Genet specifies the conditions under which he anticipates the play would be performed, revealing his characteristic concern with the politics and ritual of theatricality cquote This play, written, I repeat, by a white man, is intended for a white audience, but if, which is unlikely, it is ever performed before a black audience, then a white person, male or female, should be invited every evening. The organizer of the show should welcome him formally, dress him in ceremonial costume and lead him to his seat, preferably in the first row of the orchestra. The actors will play for him. A spotlight should be focused upon this symbolic white throughout the performance. br But what if no white person accepted? Then let white masks be distributed to the black spectators as they enter the theater. And if the blacks refuse the masks, then let a dummy be used. ref name prefnote Genet 1958, 4 . ref 20px 20px The Blacks was, after The Balcony , the second of Genet s plays to be staged in New York City New York . Multiple issues orphan February 2009 refimprove August 2007 cleanup April 2011 Merge to Great Migration African American date April 2011 The Urbanization of Blacks In America During the early nineteen hundreds most blacks in America resided in four main cities New York , Baltimore , Philadelphia , and Boston . The distribution of black America s changed due to a few major factors. These factors play a huge role in what we know today as the Black community. Emancipation Factor 1 After emancipation black Americans began to migrate to northern cities. Some of the reasons for their migration included the opportunity for employment and the fact that blacks were able to vote in the northern states. The number of blacks living in urban areas increased from twenty eight to approximately forty eight percent. The reason that many Black Americans migrated to the northern cities was due to the increase in industrialization. World War I 1914 1918 Factor 2 In response to World War I there was an increasing need for unskilled and skilled labor. The increase in the need to fill labor positions is referred to as the War Boom. Black American s now had the opportunity to better their standard of living with employment opportunities in meat packing, the steel industry and in the south ship making. World War II 1939 1945 Factor 3 In response to World War II Black American were migrating to the North and the West where defense operations we intact. In the nineteen fifties only forty percent of American Blacks lives in rural farms.
